Principal Premlata Kumari has been suspended in the case of a fifth-grade student's death due to burns at Kanya Madhya Vidyalaya in Patna. The District Magistrate termed the incident as gross negligence and initiated a police investigation.
Patna: The district administration has taken strict action following the death of a fifth-grade student from burns at Kanya Madhya Vidyalaya, Gardanibagh, Patna, Bihar. District Magistrate Thyagarajan SM stated on Friday that the school's Principal, Premlata Kumari, has been suspended with immediate effect. He termed it as "criminal negligence" and said that a First Information Report (FIR) is being lodged by the police, and an investigation is underway.
The DM clarified that this tragic incident, which occurred within the school premises, reflects the principal's negligence, lack of supervision, and insensitivity. The administration has also directed the education department to initiate departmental proceedings against the suspended principal.
Student Set Herself on Fire in School
According to sources, the student set herself on fire in the school bathroom on Wednesday (August 27, 2025). She was immediately admitted to PMCH, but she succumbed to her injuries by evening. Following the incident, the victim's family and local residents became agitated.
On Thursday (August 28), the family and villagers protested, engaging in arson and creating a commotion. The family alleged that the child did not set herself on fire but was burned by the school masters.
Directive to Issue Charge Sheet
In a press release, District Magistrate Thyagarajan SM stated that laxity in official duties will not be tolerated. Accordingly, Principal Premlata Kumari has been suspended under the Bihar Government Servants (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules, 2005.
During the suspension period, the principal has been posted at the headquarters of the Block Education Officer, Phulwarisharif office. Departmental proceedings have also been initiated against her. The District Education Officer has been instructed to issue a charge sheet.
Children's Safety is a Primary Responsibility
The District Magistrate informed that the police investigation is ongoing and all facts will be ascertained soon, after which legal action will be taken against the culprits. He cautioned all officers and staff that ensuring the safety of children in schools is a primary responsibility. This incident has caused concern in the education department and society. Experts opine that adherence to safety standards in schools and ensuring proper supervision and vigilance for children is imperative.
