According to the Hindu Panchang, the Amavasya (new moon) of the Krishna Paksha (waning phase of the moon) in the month of Bhadrapada is known as Pithori Amavasya. This day is considered entirely dedicated to the ancestors (Pitras). It is believed that performing Shraddha (rites for the deceased), Tarpan (offering water to ancestors), and charity on this date liberates one from Pitra Dosha (ancestral debt) and brings the blessings of the ancestors. In many regions of India, it is also known as Kushotpatini Amavasya. According to religious beliefs, offering Pind Daan (offering of food to ancestors) and Tarpan to the ancestors on this day brings happiness, prosperity, and peace to the family. Furthermore, bathing in rivers and performing acts of charity paves the way for freedom from sins and fulfillment of desires.
The significance of this date is not limited to the worship of ancestors alone; it is also associated with the worship of Goddess Durga and her 64 forms (yoginis). It is believed that the Pithori Amavasya fast is particularly fruitful for obtaining children and ensuring their prosperity. Married women on this day make idols of deities from flour, worship them, and observe a fast. This is why it is called Pithori Amavasya. From a religious point of view, this day not only provides an opportunity to please the ancestors but is also considered to open the doors to positive energy and good fortune in life.

- Feed the needy: Feeding the poor and Brahmins brings satisfaction to the ancestors and removes the Dosha.
- Donate: Donating sesame seeds, grains, clothes, and Dakshina (monetary offering) reduces obstacles in life and brings happiness and peace to the home.
Religious Significance of Pithori Amavasya
Pithori Amavasya is also known as Matru Amavasya (Mother's New Moon). On this day, women with children worship Goddess Durga and wish for the long life and good health of their children.
