PM Modi Maldives Visit: Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the 60th Independence Day celebrations held in Malé, the capital of Maldives. This occasion is being considered a significant step towards further strengthening relations between India and Maldives.
PM Modi's visit to Maldives was special as President Mohamed Muizzu himself arrived at the airport to welcome him. The Prime Minister was presented with a grand Guard of Honour by the Maldivian army, a symbol of state honor.
Indian Community chanted 'Vande Mataram'
When Prime Minister Modi arrived in Maldives, people from the Indian community gave him a rousing welcome. Slogans of 'Vande Mataram' echoed at the airport. Seeing this welcome, the Prime Minister emotionally thanked the Indians.
He posted on X (formerly Twitter) that the role of the Indian diaspora is important in strengthening cooperation between India and Maldives. He wrote that interacting with the Indian community during this visit was pleasant, and he expresses gratitude for this warmth.
New turn in bilateral relations
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit was not limited to just a formal ceremony. It is also being seen as an effort to bridge the growing distance between India and Maldives. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated that this is the first state visit by any head of government during President Muizzu's tenure. After becoming President in November 2023, relations between India and Muizzu faced some strain, which is now being attempted to be eased.
Development projects to be inaugurated
PM Modi's visit also includes the inauguration of several development projects supported by India. These include schemes related to infrastructure, health, education, and water transport. These projects will not only improve the lives of the people of Maldives but will also deepen bilateral cooperation under India's 'Neighbourhood First' policy. India has long been a reliable partner for Maldives. Whether it is emergency health assistance or help in dealing with climate change, India has always prioritized this island nation.
