Rahul Gandhi Accuses Maharashtra Assembly Elections of Rigging
Maharashtra: Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, authored an article alleging widespread rigging in the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections. He claimed the Election Commission compromised its integrity, alleging the addition of fraudulent voters to the electoral rolls, inflated voter turnout figures, and fraudulent voting at several polling booths. Gandhi termed the entire process "match-fixing" and warned that similar tactics would be employed in the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections.
Devendra Fadnavis Responds Strongly
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis dismissed Gandhi's allegations, stating that the public rejected Gandhi and he is now rejecting the mandate. He accused Gandhi of consistently undermining democratic processes and constitutional institutions, arguing this will further harm the Congress party. Fadnavis also suggested that leveling accusations after electoral defeat has become a Congress strategy.
NDA's Landslide Victory in Maharashtra Elections
Fadnavis highlighted the BJP-led NDA's victory in 235 out of 288 seats in the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections. He emphasized that the opposition parties – Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and NCP (SP) – collectively failed to secure enough seats to even form a credible opposition. He asserted that this reflects the public's decision, which should not be disregarded.
Election Commission Rejects Rahul Gandhi's Allegations
The Election Commission categorically rejected Gandhi's allegations, stating that electoral rolls are prepared according to law and the electoral process is entirely transparent. The Commission noted that out of 9.77 crore registered voters in Maharashtra, fewer than 90 filed complaints related to the voter lists. Over 6.4 crore votes were cast, with polling agents present at every booth. The Commission stated that such accusations question the integrity of the Election Commission and tarnish the entire process.
Fadnavis Takes a Jibe at Rahul Gandhi Regarding Bihar Elections
Fadnavis accused Gandhi of preemptively seeking excuses for electoral losses in Bihar and other states. He warned that if the Congress continues to disrespect the public mandate, it will not be forgiven. He stressed the importance of respecting democracy and the Constitution, asserting that violating them is unacceptable.
