Team India's wicketkeeper-batsman, Rishabh Pant, suffered a serious injury on the first day of the Lord's Test. During the second session, while keeping wickets, a fast ball struck his index finger, forcing him to leave the field immediately.
Sports News: Team India received a major setback on the first day of the third Test match being played between India and England at the historic Lord's Cricket Ground when the in-form wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant was injured on the field. Pant had to leave the field immediately after the injury, and Dhruv Jurel was brought in as a substitute wicketkeeper.
When and how did Rishabh Pant get injured?
This injury occurred in the 34th over when England was batting, and Jasprit Bumrah was bowling. Pant dived to stop the ball, which went towards the leg side on the first ball of the over. The ball hit his left index finger hard, causing him to appear in immediate pain. The physiotherapist immediately reached the field and provided treatment, but when there was no relief from the pain, the BCCI's medical team sent him off the field as a precaution.
BCCI gave official information
After the match, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) told PTI in its statement: "Indian team's vice-captain Rishabh Pant has sustained an injury to his left index finger. He is currently undergoing treatment and is under the supervision of our medical team. Dhruv Jurel is keeping wickets in his place. The severity of his condition can be confirmed only after the scan reports."
According to this statement, Pant's injury could be serious, but there is no official confirmation yet whether he will be out of the match or not. Pant's injury is no less than a major setback for the Indian team. He is in tremendous form in this series. In the Leeds Test, he scored centuries in both innings – 134 and 118 runs, which was the second time a wicketkeeper had scored two centuries in a Test match.
Apart from this, he also played important innings of 25 and 65 runs in the Edgbaston Test. His aggressive batting has kept India in a b position in this series. Therefore, if he is unable to play in the next innings, it will directly affect India's batting line-up.
Dhruv Jurel got the responsibility of wicketkeeping
After Pant left the field, young wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel was deployed behind the wickets as a substitute. Jurel has recently performed effectively in domestic cricket and for the India A team, but getting the responsibility suddenly on a big stage like Lord's would be challenging for him. According to the statement issued by the BCCI's medical team, a final decision regarding the severity of Rishabh Pant's injury will be taken only after a scan.
