Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Chief Mohan Bhagwat clarified on Friday that despite having a uniform and physical training, the RSS is not a ‘paramilitary’ organization.
New Delhi: RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat openly addressed long-standing misconceptions about the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on Friday. He stated unequivocally that despite wearing uniforms, conducting processions, and engaging in physical exercise, the RSS is not a paramilitary organization. He emphasized the importance of understanding the organization’s core objectives rather than viewing its identity and role superficially.
Addressing a public gathering, Bhagwat said that the RSS works to connect society and cultivate qualities such as morality, discipline, and patriotism within it. He stressed that the RSS’s goal is to make India a b and self-reliant nation, so that the country does not come under the control of any foreign power in the future.
Uniform Does Not Mean Paramilitary - RSS Chief
The RSS Chief clarified that the RSS’s uniform and discipline are often misinterpreted. Bhagwat said, “We wear uniforms, conduct processions, and perform physical drills. But to consider this a paramilitary organization is a grave mistake.” He explained that the structure of the RSS is unique and not easily understood.
The RSS does not function like an army, nor is its purpose to demonstrate power. The RSS’s work is to awaken social consciousness and develop a sense of responsibility among citizens.

Questioning the Narrative Being Built Against the RSS
Mohan Bhagwat said that a false and misleading narrative has been built around the RSS for a long time. He also questioned modern information culture, saying that today people rely on superficial sources instead of delving into the depth of a subject. He said, “Nowadays, people do not go to reliable sources for correct information. They simply look at Wikipedia, and it is not necessary that all the information provided there is correct.”
According to Bhagwat, those who understand the RSS from trustworthy and authentic sources will clearly see the organization’s true role and objectives. Referring to the centenary year of the RSS, the RSS Chief also dismissed the notion that the RSS was formed as a result of opposition or reaction. He said that the RSS is neither against anyone nor does it compete with anyone.
Bhagwat said, “The RSS was not formed in reaction. We are not here to compete with anyone or fight any ideology.” According to him, the RSS’s objective is to organize society and work for the long-term interests of the nation.
The British Were Not the First Invaders - Bhagwat
Commenting on history, Mohan Bhagwat said that the British were not the first foreigners to invade India. He explained that even before them, people coming from outside in limited numbers had defeated India several times. Bhagwat said, “They were neither richer than us nor more virtuous than us. Yet, they repeatedly defeated us in our own home. This happened seven times, and the British were the eighth invaders.”
He questioned what guarantees the sustainability of India’s freedom if it has become independent. According to him, it is extremely necessary to learn from history and engage in self-reflection.
