The dedicated Shravan Somavar Vrat, observed to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva, will be observed this year on June 2nd, a Monday. It is believed that observing a fast and performing Shiva Puja on this day fulfills all the desires of devotees. The Parana, or breaking of the fast, is scheduled for June 3rd, at 5:44 AM.
A Special Day for the Worship of Lord Someshwar
The word "Somavar" is derived from the Sanskrit word "Soma," meaning the moon. The moon god, "Soma," adorns Lord Shiva's matted hair; therefore, Shiva is also called "Someshwar." On this day, fasting devotees worship Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati, seeking a blissful life and ultimately, moksha (liberation).
Why is Somavar Vrat Special?
- Unmarried women observe this fast to find a suitable husband.
- Married women observe it for the happiness and peace of their marital life and the long life of their husbands.
- Devotees believe this fast grants all worldly pleasures and ultimately, moksha.
Which Mondays are Particularly Significant?
- Shravan Somavar (July-August): Popular in North India, Maharashtra, and Gujarat
- Kartik Somavar (October-November): Prevalent in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh
- Karthikai Somavaram (November-December): Revered in Tamil Nadu
- Somavati Amavasya: When Amavasya (new moon) falls on a Monday, this day is considered particularly auspicious.

- Observers wake up before sunrise, bathe, and wear clean clothes.
- The Shiva Lingam is anointed with Panchamrit (milk, yogurt, honey, ghee, and Ganga water) at home or in a temple.
- Bilva leaves, white flowers, and ashes are offered to the deity.
- The mantra "Om Namah Shivaya" is chanted throughout the day.
- In the evening, devotees devoutly recite the mythological story of Somavar Vrat.
- Fasting individuals may observe a complete water fast (Nirjala Vrat) or consume fruits (Falahar). Some people eat one meal.
- The fast is broken the next morning after puja, and Prasad (holy offering) is distributed.
Mention of the Mythological Story
According to religious beliefs, Chandradeva (the moon god) initiated this fast through Shiva worship. He sought a boon from Lord Shiva that whoever observes this fast with devotion will attain worldly happiness and ultimately, moksha. Sage Vashishtha also performed this fast and obtained Devi Arundhati as his wife.
