Shubman Gill Breaks Virat Kohli's Record, Eyes Sunil Gavaskar's Mark in England Test Series

The third match of the five-match Test series between India and England has reached an exciting stage at the historic Lord's ground, often called the Mecca of Cricket.

Sports News: Young Indian Test team captain Shubman Gill has achieved another historic feat. In the ongoing 5-match Test series against England, Gill has surpassed the record of former captain Virat Kohli, setting a new national benchmark. Although Gill scored only 16 runs in the first innings of the third Test at Lord's, this small innings has brought him to an important milestone. He has earned the distinction of becoming the Indian captain with the most runs in a Test series in England.

Virat Kohli's Record Broken

Former captain Virat Kohli had scored 593 runs in five Test matches during the 2018 England tour, which was the most runs scored by any Indian captain in a Test series in England. Now, Shubman Gill has broken this record, reaching a figure of 601 runs – and that too in just 5 innings. Gill's achievement is considered a milestone for Indian cricket.

Gill's Performance in the Series So Far

  • Matches Played: 3
  • Innings: 5
  • Total Runs: 601
  • Average: 120.20
  • Centuries: 2
  • Half-Centuries: 1
  • Best Score: 176

The consistency and technique with which Shubman Gill has batted in this series has placed him not only in the company of Virat Kohli but also among legendary batsmen.

Gill Eyes Sunil Gavaskar's Record

After this historic achievement, Gill now has another big record in his sights. India's former great batsman Sunil Gavaskar had scored 732 runs in the 6-match Test series against the West Indies in 1978-79 – which is still the highest number of runs scored by an Indian captain in a Test series. Gill needs to score 133 more runs to break this record, and he still has two Test matches remaining – meaning the chances are high that he will also claim this benchmark.

  1. Sunil Gavaskar - 732 runs
  2. Virat Kohli - 655 runs
  3. Virat Kohli - 610 runs
  4. Shubman Gill - 601 runs

In the third Test, England batted first and scored 387 runs, ending the first day at 251/4. But on the second day, Jasprit Bumrah wreaked havoc, taking 5 wickets and dismissing the entire England team. The Indian innings, however, started shakily. Yashasvi Jaiswal could only score 13 runs, and Karun Nair added 40 runs. Where a big innings was expected from Shubman Gill, he was out for 16 runs.
