Silver Trumpet Tree at Parliament to be Transplanted for Security Reasons

The 'Silver Trumpet' tree identified for security reasons at the Parliament House will be transplanted to a new location next week. Security ensured under the supervision of SPG, CPWD and Forest Department.

New Delhi. A tree in the Parliament House complex has been deemed an obstruction from the perspective of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's security. The process of transplanting this tree to another location will begin soon. This decision was taken after the Special Protection Group (SPG), the Central Public Works Department (CPWD), and the Delhi Forest Department reached a consensus. The SPG has identified this tree, located at the Gaj Dwar (Elephant Gate) of the Parliament House, as a security obstacle because the Prime Minister frequently uses this gate.

The 'Silver Trumpet' Tree and its Characteristics

According to information, this tree is a fully grown Tabebuia argentea species, commonly known as the 'Silver Trumpet'. It is distinguished by its bright yellow flowers and has grown rapidly in seven years. This tree thrives in full sunlight and well-drained soil. As a result, it is often seen in public places, along roadsides, and in gardens.

Why this Step was Taken

The SPG identified this tree as a potential obstruction in the VVIP route. The CPWD was instructed to transplant this tree based on the security concerns raised by the SPG. The Delhi Forest Department's permission was also necessary for this step. The process of planting the tree in a new location will begin soon, and permission has been granted based on 'strict conditions'.

New Location and Inspiration Site

An official stated that the tree could be planted in its new location next week after the monsoon session concludes. A special inspiration site has been chosen within the Parliament House complex for this purpose, where national emblems and statues of freedom fighters are located. Previously, these symbols and statues were in different locations within the complex. The document mentions that after an inspection on July 21, the site was found suitable and adequate for tree transplantation.

What Other Trees will be Planted at the New Location?

The CPWD will not only transplant the Silver Trumpet at the inspiration site but will also carry out compensatory afforestation of 10 plants of other native species such as Neem, Amaltas, Peepal, Banyan, Sheesham, and Arjun. It will be ensured that the new location is secure from a security perspective and maintains the aesthetics and greenery of the complex.

Role of Security Agencies

The SPG, CPWD, and Delhi Forest Department have played a significant role in this decision. The SPG is responsible for ensuring the Prime Minister's security. The CPWD will handle the technical and construction work of transplanting the tree. The Delhi Forest Department had to grant permission for the tree to be transplanted to another location. All agencies are working together to ensure that the transplantation is safe, effective, and timely.
