Indian-Singapore: The navies of India and Singapore conducted the joint annual naval exercise 'SIMBEX 2025' from July 28th to August 1st, 2025. This exercise represents the longest continuous bilateral exercise between the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) and the Indian Navy. It began in 1994, and this year marked its 32nd edition.
Exercise Divided into Coastal and Maritime Phases
SIMBEX 2025 was conducted in two main phases. The first phase was a coastal exercise at the Changi Naval Base in Singapore, emphasizing strategic discussions, planning, and coordination. The second phase was a maritime exercise, conducted at the southern edge of the South China Sea. This phase was crucial for tactical maneuvers, air coordination, and assessing the collective capabilities of the navies.
Major Vessels and Aircraft Involved
The Indian Navy was represented in this exercise by INS Satpura, a Shivalik-class frigate. This vessel is indigenously built and equipped with advanced radar, weapon systems, and a helicopter deck.
The Singapore Navy was represented by RSS Supreme, a Formidable-class frigate, and RSS Vigilance, a Victory-class missile corvette. In addition, the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) contributed an S70B naval helicopter, two Fokker-50 maritime patrol aircraft, and two F-15SG fighter aircraft to the exercise.
Effort to Enhance Tactical Competencies
The objective of SIMBEX is not only to strengthen mutual coordination and trust between the two navies, but also to improve the ability to conduct joint operations in complex maritime scenarios. The exercise included maneuvers, air interoperability, search and rescue operations, weapons deployment, and demonstration of communication skills.
Commanding Officers' Response
Lieutenant Colonel Aaron Koh, Commanding Officer of RSS Supreme, said, "SIMBEX is a symbol of the long-term and enduring relationship between the navies of both countries. This exercise is a powerful platform for enhancing the operational skills, mutual understanding, and trust of our naval personnel."
Indian Navy officials also believe that such joint exercises strengthen India's strategic reach and partnerships in the maritime domain.
