The apex court has stayed the bail order granted by the Delhi High Court for the time being. Following this decision, the case has once again become a national topic of discussion.
Important Hearing in the Supreme Court
A hearing in the Unnao rape case was held in the Supreme Court on Monday. The hearing was conducted by a bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant. Justices J.K. Maheshwari and Augustine George Masih were also part of the bench. During the hearing, the Court stayed the Delhi High Court's decision granting conditional bail to Kuldeep Singh Sengar.
CBI Presents a Strong Case in Court
During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), adopted a strict stance before the court. He stated that the case is related to a very serious and heinous crime committed against a minor girl. The CBI argued that showing leniency in such crimes would send a wrong message to society.
The CBI also stated that the victim was a minor and that canceling the conviction or granting bail to the guilty, considering the severity of the crime, is against the principles of justice. The agency requested the Supreme Court to immediately halt the Delhi High Court's order.
Notice Issued on Important Legal Questions
The Supreme Court bench listened to the CBI's arguments seriously. The Court stated that there are several important legal questions in this case that need to be considered in detail. On this basis, the court issued a notice staying the Delhi High Court's decision. The Court directed all concerned parties to file their responses within 14 days.
Protests Increased After High Court's Decision
It is noteworthy that on December 23rd, the Delhi High Court granted conditional bail to Kuldeep Singh Sengar. The High Court overturned the jail sentence, stating that Sengar had already served seven years and five months in prison. As soon as this decision came out, protests began across the country.
Victim Strongly Opposed the Decision
Following the Delhi High Court's decision, the victim in the Unnao rape case herself arrived in Delhi. She filed an application against the bail at the CBI office. The victim clearly stated that her and her family's safety would be threatened if the accused were released.
Since the High Court order, the victim, her mother, and social activist Yogita Bhayana have been continuously staging a sit-in protest. Demonstrations took place in many places in Delhi, with a large number of people participating. Everyone had the same demand: that Kuldeep Singh Sengar's bail be canceled and he be sent back to jail.
