Haryana's politics heated up when senior Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala made serious allegations against the state government, accusing it of surrendering to the mafia. On Sunday, at a press conference in Chandigarh, Surjewala targeted the Nayab Singh Saini government, stating that Haryana is now enduring anarchy similar to 'Gangs of Wasseypur'. He demanded the resignation of the Chief Minister, citing his failure as Home Minister.
Surjewala stated that the state has become a haven for crime, mafia rule, and administrative inaction. He further alleged that criminals have become so emboldened that they are beyond the control of the police and administration. He questioned whether the government has any right to remain in power when it cannot protect the law and the constitution.
3 Murders Daily
Surjewala also cornered the state government with crime statistics. He stated that according to the NCRB report and the government's own data, 966 murders were recorded in Haryana in 2024 — an average of 3 murders per day. Additionally, 45 people go missing every day, and 46 crimes against women are recorded daily.
He further stated that between January and March 2025, 4137 people have gone missing, including a significant number of abduction cases. Surjewala said that notorious gangs like Lawrence Bishnoi, Goldy Brar, Bambiha, and Kaushal Chaudhary are active in Haryana, and the government has failed to rein them in.
He added that instead of news about the achievements of athletes and investments, newspapers are now filled with reports of paper leaks, drugs, corruption, and lathi charges on farmers.
Government's Response
The Haryana government bly reacted to the Congress leader's allegations. A government spokesperson said that Surjewala's allegations are baseless and politically motivated. He said, "The opposition's intention is only to tarnish the image of the state. The truth is that the government is taking strict action against crime and the mafia."
The spokesperson stated that while 1106 cases of murder were registered in 2014, this number has decreased to 966 in 2024. He said that special campaigns are being conducted against women's safety issues, cybercrime, and drug trafficking.
STF Actions and Strict Vigilance on Criminals
According to government statistics, there has been a decline in the rate of serious crimes in the state between January 1 and June 30, 2025. The Special Task Force (STF) has arrested 433 proclaimed offenders, 248 gangsters, and 792 serious criminals since 2023.
Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini recently held a review meeting with officials and gave clear instructions that no leniency towards criminals would be tolerated. The spokesperson said, "Our priority is the safety of the people of the state. Maintaining law and order is our responsibility, and no shortcomings will be tolerated in this regard."
