Delhi: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor sharply criticized the lunch meeting between former US President Donald Trump and Pakistan's army chief, General Asim Munir, at the White House. He emphasized that the US should not forget Pakistan's sheltering of Osama bin Laden. He also expressed hope that Trump raised concerns about Pakistan-sponsored terrorism during the meeting.
White House Meeting
On Wednesday, a lunch meeting took place between former US President Trump and Pakistani Army Chief Asim Munir at the White House. The Trump administration described the meeting as a positive step towards de-escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. Trump also praised Munir's role in maintaining 'stability' in the region. However, India expressed concerns over this meeting.
Attacks on India and Pakistan's Role
Questioning the Trump-Munir meeting, Shashi Tharoor pointed out that Pakistan has harbored terrorists for years. He mentioned that Osama bin Laden, the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks, was found in Pakistan. He stressed that the US should not forget this lesson.
Tharoor stated that Pakistan-sponsored terrorists continue to carry out attacks in India. India explicitly blamed Pakistan and its army for the recent Pulwama terror attack. He expressed hope that Trump had raised these issues sternly with Munir.
Operation Sundar and the Pak Army's Involvement
The Congress leader also mentioned Operation Sundar, an operation in which India eliminated several terrorists. Tharoor highlighted the presence of Pakistani army officials at the funerals of these terrorists as evidence of the Pakistani army's support for terrorists. He considered this a wake-up call for the international community.
Appeal for Caution to the US
Tharoor urged the US to exercise caution while strengthening ties with Pakistan. He argued that a friendly meeting with the army chief of a country that once harbored a terrorist like Osama bin Laden could be a dangerous sign. He reminded the US that it has also been a major victim of terrorism.
