Train Punctuality Falls 28.68 Percent in December Due to Fog, Cold and Technical Issues

Train punctuality declined by 28.68 percent in December, according to railway authorities, who attributed the drop primarily to cold weather, dense fog, and technical factors including engine failures.

Railway data show that persistent dense fog across several parts of north India during December forced trains to reduce speed significantly. Extremely low visibility led to frequent halts or restricted operations on multiple routes, resulting in long-distance mail and express trains reaching their destinations several hours behind schedule.

Railway officials said technical challenges increase during the winter season. Instances of engine faults, brake system issues, and signalling-related problems were reported at several locations. In some cases, trains were stopped mid-route to replace engines, further extending delays. Fog-related visibility constraints also required train speeds to be regulated for safety reasons.

Delayed services affected passengers the most. At Patna City and other major railway stations in Bihar, passengers were required to wait on platforms for several hours. Several passengers reported delays ranging from five to 10 hours, affecting onward connecting trains and personal schedules.

Railway authorities stated that passenger safety remains the top priority and that no operational risks can be taken during foggy conditions. Officials said special operating instructions are implemented during fog and are followed strictly.

To address the situation, the railway administration has deployed fog safety devices, additional loco pilots, and technical staff in fog-prone areas. Trains are being continuously monitored from control rooms to reduce delays wherever possible. Despite these measures, maintaining normal operations amid adverse weather conditions remains a challenge.

According to the meteorological department, cold weather and fog may continue during the early days of January. The railway administration has advised passengers to check live train status before travelling and to plan journeys while accounting for possible delays.
