Washington: US President Donald Trump has dismissed questions being raised about India-US relations, calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi his "friend forever." Following a recent statement suggesting India had been lost to China, Trump has reversed his stance, stating that the relationship between India and the US is very special and requires no concern.
Trump said, "Modi is a great Prime Minister. He is my friend and will always be. The India-US relationship is very special, and there is no need for anyone to worry about it." However, he also acknowledged that he does not currently agree with some of Prime Minister Modi's decisions, but clarified that this would not affect bilateral relations.
Hint of Trade Agreement
In a conversation with the media, Trump provided an update on progress in trade agreements with several countries, including India. He said that discussions are ongoing towards an agreement between the two countries and positive outcomes can be expected in the near future. However, Trump expressed displeasure with the European Union (EU), stating that the EU is discriminating against American companies.
The European Union had recently imposed a $3.5 billion fine on tech giant Google, alleging that the company had harmed competition in the online advertising technology (AdTech) sector. Regarding this, Trump said that the EU's action is unfair and that America will not tolerate it.
A few days ago, Trump had written on his social media account that America had lost India and Russia to China. His statement had caused global concern regarding India-US relations. However, he has now clarified that he does not feel India has moved away from America.
In this conversation, Trump also commented on India's purchase of oil from Russia. He said that New Delhi's increased import of Russian oil disappoints him, and he has made India aware of his displeasure on this issue. As Western countries are trying to economically isolate Russia, India's move creates an uncomfortable situation for America.
