UIDAI Implements AI to Combat Aadhaar Card Fraud and Strengthen Security

Google and Meta are scheduled to appear before the ED today for questioning regarding money laundering in connection with promoting online betting apps.

Aadhar Card: The manipulation of Aadhaar cards, considered the most important identity document in India, is about to be curbed. To prevent fraud and repeated update activities, UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) has now geared up. For this, UIDAI is now resorting to advanced technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML), which will make it possible to catch fake Aadhaar cards or date of birth fraud with ease.

Changing Biometrics and Date of Birth is No Longer Easy

Until now, Aadhaar card holders had the facility to change their biometric data (such as fingerprints and face scans) or date of birth multiple times. But UIDAI has realized in recent years that some people are misusing this facility – for example, showing a younger age to participate in cricket trials or showing an older age to avoid jobs. Now, UIDAI, through an AI-based identification system, will be able to identify why a person is repeatedly updating biometrics or date of birth and whether there is any suspicious intent behind it.

UIDAI CEO Gives Hints

UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar recently said in a statement that now the existing database will be matched for biometric updates. If there is a frequent change of biometrics in a person's Aadhaar, the AI system will alert on it. This technology will not only prevent fake identity, but will also strengthen the security of genuine citizens.

Aadhaar Application Process Will Also Be Completely Digital

UIDAI has also decided that the process of applying for a new Aadhaar card will now be completely online. Users will have to upload their documents in digital format, which will be verified through AI. This change will largely eliminate the possibility of tampering with documents.

Update Rules Will Be Strict

  • Now, fingerprint and face data in everyone's Aadhaar can be updated only a limited number of times.
  • Only senior citizens and people with special needs will be allowed to change biometrics frequently.
  • Common citizens will be prevented from regularly misusing this facility.
  • Stricter evidence and digital verification process will now be adopted for updating date of birth.

Eye on Non-Indians Too

UIDAI has recently taken another big step, in which fake applications made by non-Indian citizens are being strictly rejected. According to UIDAI, in the last 6 months, 1,456 such applications have been rejected who were not Indian but were applying for Aadhaar in the category of Indian citizens. Now the rules are clear — only those who have lived in India for at least 180 days can apply for Aadhaar card.

So far 1.17 Crore Aadhaar Cards Cancelled

In another major action, UIDAI has cancelled more than 1.17 crore Aadhaar cards. These cards belonged to people who had died, but their family members had not completed the process of getting them cancelled. This step is eliminating many risks associated with duplicate and fake identities.

How Will The New AI System Work?

  • The AI system will identify any manipulation by matching fingerprint and face data with the original database.
  • Machine learning algorithms will identify users who are making changes frequently and flag them.
  • All new entries related to Aadhaar will now be passed through a central verification system.
  • Digital documents will also be scanned to see whether they meet the standards of eligibility and validity.
