WhatsApp Security Alert: CERT-In, the cyber agency of the Indian government, has issued a high-risk warning to iPhone and MacBook users regarding older versions of WhatsApp. The agency stated that the app's security vulnerability was found due to incorrect handling of message synchronization in linked devices. Exploiting this vulnerability, hackers can perform remote attacks and access users' private chats and confidential data without their knowledge. For this reason, experts have advised immediately updating WhatsApp to the latest version to keep data and chats secure.
Where was the vulnerability found?
According to the CERT-In advisory, this weakness surfaced due to the incorrect handling of message synchronization in WhatsApp's linked devices. By exploiting this vulnerability, hackers can send malicious requests remotely and access users' chats and confidential information without their knowledge. The highest risk is associated with versions older than iOS 2.25.21.73, WhatsApp Business older than 2.25.21.78, and Mac older than 2.25.21.78.
The threat could increase further
The advisory also states that while this WhatsApp vulnerability is serious on its own, the risk can further increase if it is combined with another bug on the Apple platform (CVE-2025-43300). Cybersecurity experts say that by jointly exploiting both vulnerabilities, hackers can conduct targeted attacks, opening up numerous avenues for stealing sensitive data.
