Uttarakhand Mandates New Recognition, Teacher Standards for Madrasas; Board Abolished by 2026

For madrasas providing religious education in Uttarakhand, it will now be mandatory to obtain new recognition from the authority. The Madrasa Board will be abolished from 2026, and teacher recruitment will have to be done according to prescribed standards.

Dehradun: In Uttarakhand, it will now be mandatory for madrasas imparting religious education to obtain recognition from the authority constituted under the new law. After the implementation of this law, the Uttarakhand Madrasa Board will cease to exist from July 1, 2026, and all madrasas will only be able to provide education under the new recognition. Along with this, the appointment of teachers will also be according to the prescribed standards.

New System to be Implemented from Academic Session 2026-27

According to the new law, from the academic session 2026-27, all madrasas providing religious education will have to re-obtain recognition from the authority. This recognition will be valid for three academic sessions, after which renewal will be mandatory.

To obtain recognition, the land of the madrasa must be in the name of the institution's committee, and all financial transactions must be conducted through a commercial bank account. This step aims to ensure transparency and educational quality in madrasas.

New Qualifications Mandatory for Teacher Appointments

Minority educational institutions will now appoint their teachers according to the qualifications prescribed by the Minority Educational Institutions Council. Previously, there was no such compulsion, which led to variations in the quality of teachers.

Furthermore, madrasas cannot compel their students or staff to participate in any religious activity. This provision is considered important for ensuring students' rights and freedom within institutions.

Abolition of the Madrasa Board

In Uttarakhand, the Uttarakhand Madrasa Board will be abolished from July 1, 2026. Thereafter, all madrasas will obtain their recognition according to the new law. This decision has been taken following reports of an increase in the number of madrasas and their operation without recognition.

The Dhami government has stated that this step is necessary for enhancing educational quality, ensuring transparency, and regulating religious education.
