The Form and Significance of Lord Varaha

Lord Varaha has the face of a boar and the body of a human. His long and shining teeth are believed to have the power to lift the Earth from the ocean. He carries weapons like a sword or a spear, which reflects his warrior form. On the day of Varaha Jayanti, worshipping him is believed to provide protection from enemies, happiness, prosperity, and well-being in the family.

The Mythological Story of the Varaha Avatar

According to the story, a demon named Hiranyaksha kidnapped the Earth and took it to the Netherworld (Patal Lok). In distress, Lord Vishnu appeared in the Varaha avatar. All the gods and sages praised him and urged him to free the Earth. Lord Varaha went into the ocean, lifted the Earth on his tusks, and brought it out. Hiranyaksha challenged him to a battle, in which the demon was ultimately destroyed. After this, Lord Varaha stabilized the Earth by स्तंभित (immobilizing/petrifying) the water with his hooves. In this way, the Varaha avatar destroyed unrighteousness and re-established Dharma and justice in the world.
