New Delhi: The government has given a significant gift to farmers ahead of Diwali by increasing the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for wheat. For the marketing year 2026-27, the MSP for wheat has been raised by 6.59 percent to Rs 2,585 per quintal. Last year, this rate was Rs 2,425 per quintal. This decision was taken in a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that this decision was based on the recommendations of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP). Additionally, the government has approved an increase in MSP for six Rabi crops, which is expected to provide farmers with better returns when selling their produce.

MSP for other crops also increased along with wheat

The central government has not only increased the MSP for wheat but also for other Rabi crops. The objective is to ensure fair prices to farmers based on their costs and to improve their income.

  • Wheat: Increased by Rs 160 per quintal to Rs 2,585.
  • Safflower: Highest increase of Rs 600 per quintal.
  • Lentil: Increased by Rs 300 per quintal.
  • Rapeseed and Mustard: Increased by Rs 250 per quintal.
  • Gram: Increased by Rs 225 per quintal.
  • Barley: Increased by Rs 170 per quintal.

This increase is likely to provide farmers with better returns, commensurate with their costs and efforts. This could particularly improve the economic condition of small and medium farmers.

Government Efforts and Benefits for Farmers

The government is continuously taking steps to increase farmers' income and empower the agricultural sector. The decision to raise MSP is a significant step in this direction. It provides farmers with security in crop sales and stabilizes the market price of their produce.

According to sources, the government has taken this step to encourage farmers to increase investment in the agricultural sector and improve their earnings. This will also incentivize farmers to boost production and adopt new technologies.
