Punjab: Senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia is once again facing legal trouble in Punjab. The Mohali court has sent him to 14-day judicial custody in a disproportionate assets case. Previously, he was on a 11-day vigilance remand. He will now be transferred to Nabha Jail, and the next hearing in this case has been scheduled for July 18, 2025.
Interrogation During Vigilance Remand
Bikram Singh Majithia was arrested by the Vigilance Department on June 25 from a posh area in Amritsar. He is accused of converting over ₹540 crore of drug money into legitimate assets. After his arrest, he was sent on vigilance remand, where his properties spread across several states were investigated.
The government lawyer informed the court that Majithia's properties are located in several states, including Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, and investigations are ongoing. The court ordered his judicial custody after the remand period ended.
Hearing Pending in High Court
Majithia has also filed a petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court regarding this case. He has termed his arrest and remand as illegal. The bench of Justice Tribhuvan Dahiya has sought instructions from the state government and has fixed the next hearing date as July 8.
Majithia's Allegations
Bikram Singh Majithia told the court that the actions against him are part of political vendetta. He stated that he is being framed because he is a vocal critic and opponent of the current government. He called it a pre-planned attempt aimed at damaging his image and politically marginalizing him.
2021 Report Forms the Foundation of Action
The state government has stated that a 2021 FIR and the Vigilance Bureau's investigation report have revealed b evidence against Majithia. He is accused of conducting transactions at multiple levels to convert drug money into legitimate assets. It is also alleged that these assets have no clear legitimate source.
Following the Mohali court's order, Bikram Singh Majithia has now been sent to Nabha Jail. He will be kept in separate security from other inmates. The jail administration has been given special instructions to ensure that there are no lapses in security under any circumstances.
