Grok AI to Launch File Editor: Edit Spreadsheets with Chat and Voice Commands

Grok is set to launch an AI-powered file editor, allowing users to edit spreadsheets and other files using chat and voice commands.

Grok: There’s an interesting update regarding Grok, the AI chatbot developed by xAI, Elon Musk’s AI company. A reliable app researcher has reported that Grok is soon to receive an advanced feature that will enable users to directly edit files like spreadsheets – all through a chat interface. If this feature does materialize, it could position Grok ahead of existing competitors like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot.

What will this new AI-powered file editor do?

Independent tipster Neema Owagi shared a screenshot on X (formerly Twitter) showing Grok’s side panel linked to a spreadsheet interface. She wrote that xAI is working on this advanced file editor feature, allowing users to make changes to their documents simply by talking to Grok.

Essentially, users won’t need to manually click or type to edit spreadsheets anymore. They can simply instruct Grok, such as “Remove all negative numbers from this column” or “Calculate the three-month average and add it to the bottom,” and Grok will perform the task automatically.

Voice Command Support Will Also Be Included

Owagi also claims that this Grok feature will support voice commands. This means users will be able to make changes via their voice as well. This feature will be particularly useful for those who prefer to work by speaking rather than typing, or who are busy.

Which Files Will Be Supported?

Currently, the leak only mentions spreadsheet support, but it’s anticipated that text documents, presentations, and other formats could be added in the future. This would transform the feature into a comprehensive AI tool, offering a completely new experience for office document management.

Grok’s Journey and Competition

Grok was launched in November 2023, considerably later than tools like ChatGPT, Gemini (formerly Bard), Copilot, and Claude. However, xAI has steadily added features to bring it closer to the competition. In April 2025, Grok received computer vision, multilingual audio support, and a web browsing tool.

But this new file editor feature could set it apart and potentially ahead of its rivals. Currently, only Google Gemini offers such advanced file editing to its paid workspace users, though it lacks the live chat and editing level offered by Grok.

AI Editing Will Provide Significant Relief to Students and Businesses

If this leak proves accurate and xAI officially launches it, this feature could be a game-changer for small businesses, students, and freelancers. They won’t need expensive tools or an expert to change documents anymore; they can simply tell Grok – and it will get the job done.

It will be a completely new experience in collaborative editing, where AI not only provides advice but works alongside you. Grok will become a member of your team – working tirelessly and without error.

Feature is Under Development, Release Timing Uncertain

Currently, this feature is under development, and xAI has not yet made any official announcements. It’s also unclear whether the feature will be available to free users only or only to paid subscribers. Furthermore, it’s not yet confirmed whether it will be limited to the web interface or also be available in mobile apps.
