Gill Breaks Records of Legends as Captain

With this innings, Shubman Gill surpassed Virat Kohli. Kohli had scored 254 runs as captain, but Gill, with an innings of 269 runs, became the player with the highest runs in a captaincy innings for India in Test cricket. In addition, Gill became the first Indian captain to score a double century on English soil.

Gill completed his double century in 311 balls, and during this time, he became only the fourth Indian captain to cross the 250-run mark overseas. Before him, Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, and Mohammad Azharuddin had scored 250+ runs on foreign soil, but this achievement of Gill as captain will be considered historic.

Gill Joins Youngest Captains

Gill achieved this feat at the age of 25 years and 298 days. He became the second-youngest Indian captain to score a double century at this age. Before him, Nawab Pataudi had scored a double century against England at the age of 23 years and 39 days. The record for the youngest to score a double century as captain in England is still held by South Africa's Graeme Smith (22 years and 175 days), but Gill has achieved this milestone from an Asian perspective.

Also Created History in SENA Countries

Shubman Gill is the first Asian captain to score a double century in SENA countries (England, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa). Earlier, Sri Lanka's Tillakaratne Dilshan had played an innings of 193 runs, but Gill left this figure far behind. If we talk about the highest score by Asian batsmen in SENA countries, Gill has reached the third position. He is ahead of only Zaheer Abbas (274 runs) and Javed Miandad (271 runs).

Highest Indian Score in England

Gill also recorded the highest score by an Indian batsman in England. Earlier, this record was held by Sunil Gavaskar, who had scored 221 runs at The Oval in 1979. Gill broke this historic record by scoring 222 runs. Gill was supported in his innings by Ravindra Jadeja and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Jadeja played a useful innings of 82 runs, while Jaiswal scored 54 runs.

Gill and Jadeja had a vital 203-run partnership for the sixth wicket, which strengthened India's innings. After this, Gill partnered with Washington Sundar (not out 43) and took the team to 587. By the end of the second day's play, England had scored 77 runs for the loss of 3 wickets and were still 510 runs behind India. The Indian bowlers put the English batting order in trouble by taking early wickets.

Also Made a Name in Edgbaston

With this innings of 269 runs, Gill has become the fifth batsman to score the most runs at Edgbaston. This list includes Alastair Cook (294), Peter May (285*), Graeme Smith (277), and Zaheer Abbas (274). Gill's innings has made it clear that he is not just a talented batsman but can also become a captain who will lead India bly for the next decade. The confidence and leadership skills shown in his batting are a very good sign for Indian cricket in the coming time.
