Three students have been arrested in connection with the alleged gang rape of a young woman at South Calcutta Law College. The main accused is a former student leader. The court has sent all of them to police custody. Police investigation is ongoing.
Kolkata Rape Case: South Calcutta Law College is currently in the headlines due to a serious and shocking incident. A gang rape incident involving a young woman took place on the college premises on the night of June 25. The victim has named three people in the case. Police have arrested all the accused and presented them in court, where they have been remanded to police custody.
Who are the three accused?
1. Manojit Mishra – Main Accused
Manojit Mishra is the main accused in this case. He is a former student of the college and was the former president of the South Calcutta Law College unit of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP). He is 31 years old and comes from a middle-class Bengali family. He became an influential figure on campus while being active in student politics.
He had previously been accused of pressuring and threatening others during union activities, but no formal complaint was ever filed. Despite completing his studies, he used to visit the college regularly. He was arrested by the police on the evening of June 26 near the Siddharatha Shankar Ray Shishu Udyan. His mobile phone has been seized.
2. Jaib Ahmed – Co-accused
Jaib Ahmed is a 19-year-old student, studying in the first year at South Calcutta Law College. He resides in the Topsia area and comes from a regular working family. After enrolling in college, he started participating in union activities. Students say he is of a calm nature and easily influenced.
The police apprehended him 15 minutes after Manojit Mishra's arrest from the same area. His mobile phone was also seized.
3. Pramit Mukherjee aka Pramit Mukhopadhyay – Co-accused
Pramit is a 20-year-old student and is in his second year of college. He is a local resident and comes from a lower-middle-class family. Pramit was not active in college politics, but he was close to a group of students. The police are investigating whether he was involved in the crime himself or was pressured into it.
The police arrested him from his home on the night of June 27, and his mobile phone was seized.
Court Appearance and Remand
All three accused were presented in Alipore Court on June 27. The police requested 14 days of remand. The court sent all three to police custody until next Tuesday. The Kasba Police Station is investigating the case. The police are investigating every angle and the forensic investigation process has also begun.
What is the whole case?
According to the victim, the incident took place on the college campus between 7:30 PM and 10:50 PM on Wednesday. She had come to college at 12 noon to fill out exam-related forms. She was sitting in the union room when Manojit Mishra came there and had the main gate of the college closed. Then she was forcibly taken to the security guard's room and raped. The names of all three accused are recorded in the FIR. Manojit, the main accused, is currently the South Kolkata district general secretary of the TMC Chhatra Parishad.
Victim's Statement
The victim told the police that Manojit had proposed marriage to her. When she refused, the accused threatened her. She said that Manojit locked her in a room and threatened to kill her boyfriend and parents and send them to jail. She pleaded for mercy by holding his feet, but the accused did not relent.
She said that she was forcibly taken to the guard room and raped. The accused made a video of the incident and threatened to circulate it if she protested. When she tried to escape, she was hit with a hockey stick, which caused her serious injuries.
