The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has a new leader. The Government of India announced on Tuesday that Dr. V. Narayanan, currently the Director of the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC), will assume the role of ISRO Chairman. He will succeed S. Somanath, whose term concludes on January 14th. Dr. Narayanan will take office on January 14th and lead the organisation for the next two years.

An Inspiring Journey from Tamil Nadu to ISRO

Dr. V. Narayanan was born in Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu. Possessing a deep interest in science and technology, after completing his schooling, he joined some of the nation's top institutions. His talent and hard work earned him a place at ISRO in 1984.

His initial responsibilities were with the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), where he contributed to significant projects such as the Augmented Satellite Launch Vehicle (ASLV) and the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV). His achievements in solid propulsion and cryogenic technology are unparalleled.

IIT Kharagpur Topper

Dr. V. Narayanan's academic background is as impressive as his professional journey. He earned his M.Tech degree in Cryogenic Engineering from IIT Kharagpur with the top rank. He subsequently pursued a PhD in Aerospace Engineering. For this achievement, he was awarded a gold medal by the Astronomical Society of India.

40 Years of Experience and Countless Achievements

Dr. Narayanan has held several key positions at ISRO throughout his four-decade-long career. Currently, he is Director of LPSC, where under his leadership, the development of cryogenic engines and rocket propulsion systems has taken place. These technologies have played a crucial role in the success of India's space missions, including Chandrayaan and Mangalyaan.

Over 1200 technical reports and more than 50 research papers are credited to him. He has also delivered numerous keynote addresses at leading engineering institutions in the country, sharing his insights on space research.
