Manipur Peace Talks: Central Government Holds Crucial Meeting Between Meitei and Kuki Communities
Last Updated: 11 hour ago

Violence in Manipur has subsided after four months, but the situation is far from normal. The central government held a crucial meeting to facilitate peace between the Meitei and Kuki communities.

Manipur Violence: The central government took a significant step towards ending the long-standing ethnic conflict in Manipur. On Saturday, it held a joint meeting with representatives from the Meitei and Kuki communities. The primary objective of this meeting was to rebuild trust between both sides, foster cooperation, and formulate a clear roadmap for establishing lasting peace in the state.

Participation of Senior Officials and Civil Society Organizations

This crucial meeting included representatives from prominent organizations such as the All Manipur United Clubs Organisation (AMUCO) and the Federation of Civil Society Organisations (FOCS). Six members represented the Meitei community, while nine represented the Kuki community. A.K. Mishra, former Special Director of the Intelligence Bureau, also represented the central government.

First Joint Meeting Following the Home Minister's Announcement

It is noteworthy that a few days earlier, during a parliamentary discussion on Manipur, Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated that the government would soon hold a joint meeting with both communities. This initiative followed that announcement. Shah also clarified that the government's priority is not just ending the violence, but restoring lasting peace.

Situation Under Control, But Not Satisfactory

Although no new deaths have been reported in Manipur in the past four months, the government and administration do not consider the situation entirely satisfactory. Thousands of displaced people are still in relief camps, and efforts are underway for their repatriation and rehabilitation.

Active Role of the New Governor After President's Rule

President's rule was imposed in Manipur on February 13, 2025, after Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned. The central government subsequently appointed former Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla as the governor. He has been actively engaging with the people and has appealed for the surrender of weapons. A large number of weapons have been surrendered to the administration as a result.
