The Supreme Court has granted anticipatory bail to high-profile accused in the Chhattisgarh coal scam, offering significant relief. A two-judge bench ordered the release on bail of suspended IAS officer Ranu Sahu.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court granted significant relief by providing anticipatory bail to high-profile accused in the Chhattisgarh coal scam. A two-judge bench of the Supreme Court ordered the release on bail of suspended IAS officer Ranu Sahu, former administrative officer Soumya Chaurasia, and businessman Suryakant Tiwari. The court stated in its judgment that the investigation may take considerable time, therefore granting anticipatory bail to the accused is justified.

Strict Conditions for Bail

The Supreme Court explicitly stated that if any accused is found guilty of influencing witnesses, destroying evidence, or obstructing the investigation during their bail period, the state government can petition the court for cancellation of their bail. The court further directed that the government will monitor the accused's conduct and submit regular reports.

Supreme Court's Remarks

The bench comprising Justices Suryakant and N. Kotishwar Singh stated, "We do not want any haste in the investigation, but it is essential to ensure that the accused maintain impartiality and cooperate with the investigation." The court further added that the accused must adhere to the bail conditions; otherwise, legal action may be taken against them.

What is the Chhattisgarh Coal Scam?

This alleged scam involves numerous administrative officials, politicians, and businessmen in connection with coal transportation in Chhattisgarh. Allegations suggest that coal was illegally extracted from mines and used for political and economic gains. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Anti-Corruption Branch are investigating this case.

The state government spokesperson stated that the Supreme Court's order will be respected, but if the accused attempt to influence the investigation, the government will immediately petition for the cancellation of their bail.
