A significant change is coming for students aspiring to pursue a B.Com (Hons) degree at Delhi University (DU). The DU administration plans to make Mathematics a mandatory subject in class 12th for admission to this prestigious course starting in 2025.
Education: A major shift is on the horizon for students seeking admission to the B.Com (Hons) program at Delhi University (DU). The DU administration intends to make Mathematics a compulsory subject in class 12th for admission to this esteemed course starting in 2025. This will directly impact students who did not study Mathematics in high school.
Reasons Behind the Decision?
DU's Commerce Department believes Mathematics plays a crucial role in the B.Com (Hons) curriculum. The department notes that many students lacking a school-level Mathematics background have struggled with the B.Com (Hons) course, impacting their exam results. This is the primary reason behind the university's consideration of this change.
This potential change has drawn opposition from students and the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU). DUSU President, Ronak Khatri, stated, "This decision will profoundly impact students' futures. It cannot be implemented without prior notice and adequate deliberation. We will oppose it."
B.Com vs. B.Com (Hons): What's the Difference?
If this change is implemented, students without Mathematics in class 12th will be ineligible for admission to B.Com (Hons), but they can still enroll in the regular B.Com program. This means they will retain the option of admission to DU but will be excluded from the Honors course. Admission to all undergraduate courses in DU, including B.Com (Hons), will be through the Common University Entrance Test (CUET-UG). However, the official information bulletin for the 2025 admission process has not yet been released. The university administration is expected to announce it soon.
