The violence, which began on Friday, intensified on Saturday when an angry mob attacked a village in Shamsherganj, brutally murdering a father and son. In response to the violent situation, the administration has imposed Section 144, suspended internet services, and deployed heavy BSF and police forces.
Fear and Panic after Father-Son Murder
On Saturday afternoon, a frenzied mob launched a sudden attack in the Jafarabad area, entering a home and beating a father and son to death. This incident occurred while locals were trying to recover from the previous day's violence. According to eyewitnesses, the mob was armed and clearly intended to spread terror in the area.
Intense Atmosphere since Friday; Dispute Originated in Suti
The violence began on Friday after prayers when thousands protested the amended Wakf Act in Suti, Murshidabad. Protesters blocked NH-34. When police attempted to clear the road, clashes erupted, involving stone-pelting and vandalism.
Mob Rampage in Shamsherganj
The violence later shifted to Shamsherganj, approximately 10 kilometers from Suti, where protesters set fire to police vehicles at Dak Bangla More. A police outpost was vandalized and burned. Roadside shops, two-wheelers, and local establishments were also targeted. Police and railway properties suffered damage.
Attack on Railway Station and Relay Room
The mob also attempted to set fire to the railway gate and relay room near Dhulian station. Amidst the stone-pelting and vandalism, railway employees narrowly escaped. A joint team of police and central forces brought the situation under control, but tension remains.
High Court Petition Regarding Law and Order
Following this violent incident, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari approached the Calcutta High Court, demanding the permanent deployment of central forces in Murshidabad to restore peace.
