Presenting a Famous and Inspiring Story, Tenaliram Becomes a Jata-Dhārī Sanyāsī

King Krishnadevaraya of the Vijayanagara kingdom one day felt a desire to build a magnificent temple dedicated to Shiva. He summoned his trusted ministers and instructed them to locate a suitable site. After a few days, they unanimously selected a location, which the king also approved, and work commenced. He entrusted the entire responsibility of the temple construction to a minister, who, along with some assistants, began clearing the site. During the excavation, a golden statue of Lord Shankar was unearthed.

Some of the workers, close associates of Tenaliram, informed him about the discovery of the golden statue and the minister's greed. Despite knowing the truth, Tenaliram patiently waited for the right moment. A few days later, the muhurat (auspicious time) for the temple's foundation ceremony was announced. Following the ceremony, the king and his ministers held a court meeting to discuss the idol for the temple. He sought advice from his ministers, yet remained undecided.

The following day, the king again convened a meeting with his ministers to deliberate on the idol issue. Just then, a Jata-Dhārī Sanyāsī (a wandering ascetic with matted hair) entered the court. Everyone respectfully requested him to be seated. The Sanyāsī, seated on a cushion, informed the king that Lord Shiva himself had sent him. He explained that the court was discussing the design and creation of an idol for the upcoming Shiva temple. The ascetic further declared that Lord Shiva had dispatched him to resolve their dilemma. King Krishnadevaraya, surprised, inquired, "Did Lord Shiva himself send you?" The Sanyāsī replied, "Yes, Lord Mahakala has sent me." He stated that Lord Shiva had sent a golden idol for the temple. Pointing to a minister, the Sanyāsī declared, "The deity has been placed in this minister's home."

Upon hearing this, the minister trembled with fear. He pondered how the Sanyāsī could have learned of the hidden idol. He was forced to confess the truth to the king that he had discovered the golden idol during the excavation and kept it at his residence. The king searched the court, seeking Tenaliram, but he was nowhere to be seen. After a brief interval, Tenaliram entered the court. Everyone burst into laughter. Someone remarked, "Look, the Jata-Dhārī Sanyāsī is here!" Observing the situation, the king laughed as well, commending Tenaliram for his wisdom and entrusted him with the responsibility of the temple construction. The episode highlighted Tenaliram's exceptional intellect and keen observation skills.

A Lesson from this Story - Greed is wrong. Always act with honesty and a pure heart. Such actions never lead to shame or embarrassment.
