A 102-year-old woman fulfilled her long-held wish of visiting Haridwar after her grandson and great-grandson carried her in a palanquin to religious sites across the city, as she was unable to walk long distances due to her age.
The elderly woman had wished to visit Haridwar once to offer prayers at the Ganga and pay obeisance at religious sites. Her grandson and great-grandson took responsibility for fulfilling her wish by arranging the pilgrimage and accompanying her throughout the journey.
Unable to walk because of her advanced age, she was seated in a palanquin and taken to various religious places in Haridwar. The family ensured that her comfort was maintained throughout the journey by providing assistance and using the palanquin wherever walking was difficult.
According to the family, the woman had wanted to visit Haridwar for a long time. Although advancing age had made mobility difficult, her desire to visit the Ganga and religious sites remained unchanged. The family decided to take her to Haridwar despite the challenges associated with the journey.
During the pilgrimage, her grandson and great-grandson alternated in supporting and accompanying her. The family paid attention to her convenience throughout the trip, ensuring that she was transported safely and comfortably.
After arriving in Haridwar, the family prioritised her rest, safety and comfort. They allowed her sufficient time at each religious site and avoided rushing her during the visit.
The most important moment of the journey for the elderly woman was offering prayers at the Ganga. Her wish to see the river was fulfilled after the family safely escorted her to the ghat, where she performed पूजा-अर्चना in accordance with her religious beliefs.
Family members also took photographs during the visit. Images of the 102-year-old woman seated in the palanquin while being accompanied by her grandson and great-grandson drew public attention. People appreciated the efforts of the two young family members and described them as an example of respect and responsibility towards elders.
The elderly woman became emotional after the pilgrimage and blessed her grandson and great-grandson, saying, “May God bless everyone with children like these.”
According to the family, the journey became one of the most memorable experiences of her life. They regarded the pilgrimage not merely as a trip but as an opportunity to fulfil an important long-standing wish.
Throughout the visit, the family planned the journey according to her age and physical condition. They avoided exposing her to excessive crowds, ensured regular rest whenever required, and prioritised her convenience at every stage of the pilgrimage.
The family said that the wishes of elderly people should be fulfilled while there is still time, as even a small wish can bring great happiness in old age. They described the Haridwar pilgrimage as an example of this belief.
The elderly woman completed her visit by offering prayers at the Ganga, visiting religious sites and spending time with her family. She was transported in the palanquin throughout the journey, with her grandson and great-grandson remaining by her side.
Her blessing, “May God bless everyone with children like these,” remained the family's lasting memory of the pilgrimage.
