Indian Grandmaster Vidit Gujrathi was held to a draw by 12-year-old Argentinian prodigy Oro Faustino in the first game of the second round of the FIDE World Cup. Faustino, known as the 'Messi of Chess,' once again surprised everyone with his extraordinary playing ability.

Sports Desk: Rising star Oro Faustino has once again astonished everyone in the world of chess. At merely 12 years old, this Argentinian prodigy held India's top Grandmaster Vidit Gujrathi to a draw in the first game of the second round of the FIDE World Cup 2025.

With his brilliant performance and confidence, Faustino has proven that age is not a limit to talent. This is why he is now being called the 'Messi of Chess.'

Sensation in the First Round, Clash with Indian Veteran in the Second

Faustino had already made a splash in the first round of the FIDE World Cup. He drew global attention by defeating experienced Croatian Grandmaster Ante Brkic. Now in the second round, when he faced India's star player Vidit Gujrathi, everyone expected experience to outweigh Faustino's talent — but the opposite happened.

The 12-year-old Faustino gave Vidit a tough fight throughout the match. The game between the two players was almost evenly contested and ultimately ended in a draw after 28 moves.

Faustino's Berlin Defense and Vidit's Strategy

In this match played on Tuesday, Faustino employed the Berlin Defense with black pieces — which is considered a solid and strategic opening globally. Playing with white pieces, Vidit tried to gain an early advantage and aimed to take the initiative in the middlegame.

But Faustino, with a calm mind and precise moves, nullified Vidit's every attempt. Towards the end of the game, when the position remained equal, Vidit, not wanting to take risks, repeated the same position three times, which, according to the rules, resulted in the match being declared a draw.

Pressure on Vidit Gujrathi, but Opportunity Still Remains

This tournament is extremely important for Vidit Gujrathi. This is his last chance to qualify for the FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026. The top three players in the World Cup will directly secure a spot in the Candidates Tournament — which determines the challenger for the World Championship. Now, in the return game on Wednesday, Vidit will play with black pieces. If that match also ends in a draw, the result will be decided through tie-break games (shorter time controls) between the two players.

Calling Oro Faustino the 'Messi of Chess' is not without reason. Argentina, known for Lionel Messi in football, is now witnessing a new 'Messi' in chess. Faustino's style demonstrates confidence, depth, and unique maturity. At only 12 years old, he has challenged Grandmasters who have been playing at an international level for years.
