Agra Municipal Corporation and its task force have uncovered a case of electricity theft involving the city’s street lighting infrastructure. During a joint enforcement drive, officials disconnected multiple illegal power connections and seized cables allegedly used for unauthorized electricity supply.
An investigation found that some individuals had connected wires directly to switch boxes installed on street light poles and were using the electricity for private purposes. According to officials, power from the public lighting system was being supplied to houses, shops and roadside kiosks.
Following complaints, the Municipal Corporation’s electrical department and task force launched a joint inspection and enforcement operation.
Teams conducted inspections in the Deori Road and Kotli Bagichi areas. During the operation, officials confirmed that electricity was being drawn illegally from street light switch boxes at several locations.
Authorities disconnected more than a dozen illegal connections on the spot. Cables and other materials allegedly used in the theft of electricity were also seized.
Municipal Corporation officials stated that using electricity provided for public facilities for private purposes is illegal and results in loss of government revenue.
The investigation also indicated that the stolen electricity was not being used temporarily but on a regular basis. At several locations, wires connected to street light poles had reportedly been extended directly to houses, shops and commercial establishments.
Officials said the practice represents not only electricity theft but also a safety risk, as exposed wires and unauthorized connections could lead to accidents or fires.
Chief Engineer (Electrical and Mechanical) Ajay Kumar Ram said records of all cases detected during the drive had been compiled. A letter has been sent to Torrent Power for further action against the individuals concerned.
According to officials, vigilance authorities and other relevant agencies will now investigate the matter. Legal action may be initiated against those found responsible based on the findings of the inquiry.
The Municipal Corporation stated that its campaign against electricity theft will continue across the city. Regular inspections will be conducted to prevent misuse of public property and government resources.
Officials also appealed to residents to report any instances of electricity theft or illegal connections to the authorities. The Municipal Corporation said strict action would be taken in such cases to safeguard public resources.
