New Delhi: This year, Aja Ekadashi, which falls on the Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada month, will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 19, 2025. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, this fast is considered extremely sacred and meritorious in Hinduism. It is believed that this fast, performed with due rituals, fulfills the wishes of devotees and removes life's troubles. The Parana (breaking of the fast) for Aja Ekadashi Vrat will be observed on August 20, 2025.
According to the Hindu Panchang, the Ekadashis that occur during Chaturmas hold special significance. Religious beliefs state that fasting and worshipping Lord Vishnu on this day destroys sins from past lives and leads to salvation.
However, the scriptures also mention that if certain rules are not followed during the fast, it may be broken and its full benefits may not be obtained. Therefore, devotees should exercise special caution on this day.
Actions to Avoid on Aja Ekadashi
1. Do not Consume Rice
Eating rice is strictly prohibited on Aja Ekadashi. Whether one is observing the fast or not, consuming rice on this day destroys the merits of the fast and does not yield auspicious results.
2. Avoid Slander and Disputes
On this sacred day, it is forbidden to slander, criticize, or speak harsh words to anyone. The scriptures state that negative thoughts and disputes disrupt the sanctity of the fast and do not yield merit.
3. Do not Consume Tamasic Food
On Aja Ekadashi, garlic, onions, non-vegetarian food, and food with excessive oil and spices are prohibited. On this day, the devotee should consume sattvic food because tamasic food breaks the fast and leaves the fruit incomplete.
4. Do not Touch Tulsi
It is forbidden to touch Tulsi Mata on Ekadashi. Water should not be offered to the Tulsi plant on this day. The devotee should only worship by offering incense and lamps, only then the merit of the fast remains intact.
5. Do not Cut Hair and Nails
Cutting hair and nails is considered inauspicious on this day. Religious belief is that doing so reduces the benefits of the fast. Women, in particular, should avoid washing their hair on Aja Ekadashi.
