Thousands of people protested in Albania’s capital Tirana against a luxury resort project linked to investor Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of U.S. President Donald Trump. The proposed development, estimated to cost around ₹55,000 crore (approximately $6.5 billion), has become the focus of political and environmental controversy.
Environmental concerns have emerged as the central issue behind the demonstrations. The proposed resort is planned near a protected coastal area considered highly sensitive for biodiversity.
The area is home to several rare and protected species, including flamingos, sea turtles and seals. Environmental activists have warned that a project of this scale could seriously affect the natural balance of the region.
Protesters said the coastal ecosystem could suffer permanent damage if the project proceeds without reconsideration.
During the protest in Tirana, demonstrators chanted slogans including “Albania is not for sale” and “Save our coasts.”
Participants accused the government of acting under pressure from foreign investors and putting the country’s natural resources at risk. Protesters also alleged that the approval process lacked transparency and that local communities were not adequately consulted.
Several environmental organisations and opposition political parties in Albania have also questioned the project.
They argued that the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for a development of this scale should have been made public but was not. According to these groups, the project could pose risks to both the country’s long-term environmental security and its tourism-based economy.
Despite the protests, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama defended the project, saying it is important for economic development and foreign investment.
According to the prime minister, the resort project will proceed in accordance with the approved plan and regulations, and all required environmental standards will be followed.
The government maintains that the investment will create new opportunities in tourism and employment and strengthen the national economy.
Jared Kushner has been involved in international real estate and infrastructure projects in recent years. The proposed Albanian resort is considered part of that broader investment activity.
The project has attracted international attention because of its political, economic and environmental implications.
Environmental experts say the coastal area involved is among the most important biodiversity zones in the Balkan region. Large numbers of migratory birds visit the area, while marine ecosystems remain highly sensitive.
Experts have warned that large-scale construction, hotel infrastructure and tourism activities could affect the region’s ecology, impact local wildlife and alter the natural character of the coastline.
The dispute has generated debate within Albania as well as internationally. While the government continues to emphasise investment and development, civil society groups and environmental organisations are calling for greater transparency and environmental protection.
The government has indicated that the project will continue according to the planned schedule, although additional environmental safeguards or modifications may be considered in response to growing opposition.
Protest groups have said they intend to intensify their campaign and will continue demonstrations until the project is reconsidered.
