Senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan from Rampur has received significant relief from the Allahabad High Court. He has been granted bail until his criminal appeal, filed against the 10-year sentence handed down by the MP-MLA Special Court in the much-publicized Dungarpur case of Rampur, is pending.
Lucknow: Samajwadi Party leader and former minister Azam Khan received major relief from the Allahabad High Court on Wednesday. The MP-MLA Court had sentenced Azam Khan to 10 years in the sensational Dungarpur case. The SP leader had filed a criminal appeal against this in the Allahabad High Court and sought bail from the court until the appeal was pending. After the hearing concluded on August 12, the court had reserved its verdict. On Wednesday, the court accepted Azam Khan's bail application.
High Court Grants Bail
The hearing on Azam Khan's bail application took place in the court of Justice Sameer Jain. After the hearing, the court reserved its decision on August 12, 2024, after hearing the arguments from both sides. On Wednesday, the court announced its verdict, granting bail to Azam Khan. Along with this, the High Court also approved the bail application of contractor Barkat Ali, who is also an accused in this case.
The appeals of Azam Khan and Barkat Ali are being heard together. The Rampur MP-MLA Court had sentenced Azam Khan to ten years and Barkat Ali to seven years on May 30, 2024. Senior advocates Imran Ullah and Mohammad Khalid represented Azam Khan.
What is the Dungarpur Case?
In the Dungarpur case, a person named Abrar filed a complaint at the Ganj police station in Rampur in August 2019. According to the complaint, in December 2016, Azam Khan, retired CO Ale Hasan Khan, and contractor Barkat Ali had assaulted Abrar. Additionally, his house was vandalized, he was threatened with death, and his house was also demolished.
Abrar registered a case three years later, in 2019. After hearing the case, the MP-MLA Special Court sentenced Azam Khan to 10 years and Barkat Ali to 7 years. In this incident, residents of the Dungarpur settlement had filed 12 different cases in the name of vacating the settlement. Cases were registered under various sections including loot, theft, and assault.
