The Assam government has put a hold on the creation of Aadhaar cards for people above the age of 18. This step has been taken keeping in mind concerns related to illegal infiltration. The exemption has only been given to tribal and Scheduled Caste/Tribe people living in tea gardens for the next one year.
Dispur: The Assam government has put a hold on residents over 18 years of age getting Aadhaar cards made. This decision was taken by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on August 21, 2025, so that foreign nationals who illegally infiltrate do not obtain Indian identity. Under this policy, only tribal and Scheduled Caste/Tribe people living in tea gardens can get Aadhaar cards made for the next one year. This precautionary step has been taken with the aim of ensuring the authenticity of citizenship and enhancing security in the state.
Action against Illegal Residents in Assam
The Assam government has taken this decision keeping in mind the people living illegally in the state. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that this decision has been taken in view of the apprehension of potential infiltration from Bangladesh in the last one year.
He clarified that this step is not based on any religion or other criteria. Its purpose is only to strengthen the citizenship verification process in the state and to prevent any illegal foreigner from becoming a citizen in the future.
People in Tea Gardens will get Aadhaar Facility
The Chief Minister said that Aadhaar cards will be issued for the next one year to people above 18 years of age belonging to tribal, Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities living in tea gardens. This will ensure the identity of local communities and they will not face any hindrance in obtaining Aadhaar cards.
According to UIDAI, there is generally no age limit specified for Aadhaar cards. Even a newborn can enroll. But the Assam government has taken this step keeping in mind the special circumstances in its state.
Impact of Aadhaar Verification on Illegal People in Assam
Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized that this decision will be permanent and will be implemented keeping in mind the apprehension of infiltration in the state. He said that illegal foreigners will be prevented from getting Aadhaar illegally and this will prove to be a major obstacle in the process of Indian citizenship.
This decision is an important security measure against illegal immigrants in the state, along with tightening the Aadhaar card verification process in Assam.
