Assam CM Accuses Gaurav Gogoi of Pakistan Ties, Foreign Citizenship Threat

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma accuses Gaurav Gogoi of having ties with Pakistan and potentially leaving India due to foreign citizenship. Controversy escalated after Gogoi's statement on 'Operation Sindoor' in Parliament.

CM Himanta: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has launched a direct political attack on Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi in the Lok Sabha regarding his speech on 'Operation Sindoor'. He called Gogoi a "disgrace to Assam," and also claimed that he could leave India at any time due to his wife and children's foreign citizenship. Meanwhile, Gogoi had raised sharp questions in Parliament to the government regarding the sudden termination of Operation Sindoor. This entire matter now appears to be transforming into a major discourse on national security and political trust.

Political uproar over Gaurav Gogoi's statement in Parliament

Gaurav Gogoi, Deputy Leader of the Opposition and Congress leader in the Lok Sabha, raised several pointed questions to the central government while speaking on 'Operation Sindoor'. He asked why there was a sudden ceasefire when the entire country was united against terrorism and Pakistan appeared to be yielding.

Gogoi stated, "The entire country was supporting PM Modi. But on May 10, we received information about a ceasefire. Why? When Pakistan was ready to concede, why did you stop the operation?"

He also said that former US President Donald Trump had repeatedly claimed that he had mediated in ending the tension between India and Pakistan. In such a situation, the government should clarify at whose behest and under what circumstances the ceasefire actually took place.

Himanta Biswa Sarma's counterattack

Following these statements by Gogoi, Assam Chief Minister and BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma retaliated sharply with a post on X (formerly Twitter). Without naming Gogoi, he wrote, "Yesterday's speech in Parliament by our MP from Jorhat made it clear beyond any doubt that he is working for Pakistan. His secret trips and association with the Pakistani establishment speak volumes."

He further stated that Gogoi's wife and both children have foreign citizenship, and therefore, he can leave the country at any time. Sarma termed this as insulting to Assam and a "betrayal" of the country's pride.

Serious allegations regarding foreign citizenship and 'Pakistan connection'

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's allegations were not general political remarks. He even accused Gogoi of acting in Pakistan's interest and that what he said in Parliament was contrary to Indian national interests.

It was further stated that Gaurav Gogoi's "secret trips" and his alleged contact with Pakistani establishments should be a matter of concern for security agencies. However, so far, no concrete evidence has been made public in support of any such allegations, and an official response from the Congress party is still awaited on these allegations.

Discussion on Operation Sindoor

'Operation Sindoor' was a military operation launched by India in response to the Pahalgam terrorist attack. All three terrorists involved in this operation were killed. Home Minister Amit Shah had termed it "powerful, successful and decisive" in Parliament. But Gogoi's criticism was that when Pakistan was kneeling, India should have moved further militarily. He questioned why this was a half-hearted decision if the government did not take any steps towards taking back the territory occupied by Pakistan.
