The Bihar Police K9 unit will be augmented with 30 new trained dogs, increasing its total strength to 97. These dogs will assist in detecting drugs, alcohol, explosives, and in VVIP security.
Patna: It is confirmed that 30 newly trained dogs will soon be inducted into the Bihar Police K9 unit. Following their deployment, the total number of dogs in the unit will reach 97. These dogs will not only aid in identifying crimes and narcotics but will also play a crucial role in VVIP security operations. Additional Director General (CID) Prashant Kumar confirmed this information in Patna on Wednesday.
30 More Dogs to Join Bihar K9 Unit
Prashant Kumar stated that these 30 dogs are currently undergoing training at the Integrated Intelligence Training Academy (IITA) located in Hyderabad. The dogs are expected to return to Bihar and become part of the K9 unit within the next two to three months. This will further strengthen the police's security and crime control capabilities.
Currently, the Bihar Police has 67 trained dogs, while the sanctioned strength of the unit is 200. These dogs have received specialized training for various tasks, such as detecting explosives, narcotics, alcohol, and tracking criminals.
Procurement of 50 More Dogs for K9 Unit
Prashant Kumar informed that due to the expanding scope and responsibilities of the K9 unit, the process for procuring 50 more dogs has also commenced. This procurement will be completed in the coming months from the Home Guard Training Institute in Punjab.
Furthermore, special attention is being given to training programs to enhance the unit's strength. Among the existing 67 dogs, 19 have been trained for explosive detection, 21 for tracking criminals, and 21 for alcohol detection. Six dogs are proficient in detecting narcotic and psychotropic substances.
Various Breeds Deployed in Bihar Police K9 Unit
The Bihar Police K9 unit comprises dogs of various breeds. This includes 55 Labradors, six Belgian Malinois, four German Shepherds, and two Golden Retrievers. These dogs are deployed at different police range headquarters across the state and undergo regular training.
ADG Prashant Kumar mentioned that these dogs are also deployed for security inspections during VVIP events. In recent times, with their assistance, several caches of illegal liquor and narcotics have been detected and seized.
K9 Unit Strengthens Security and Crime Control
Prashant Kumar stated that the importance of the K9 unit is not limited to crime prevention alone. With the help of these dogs, timely warnings and security can be ensured in major investigations and VVIP security operations. The increase in the number of trained dogs will make police actions faster and more effective.
He also revealed that plans are underway to double the capacity of the K9 unit in the future. Under this plan, more dogs will be trained to achieve better results in both crime control and security sectors in the state.
