Raipur: In a major operation conducted in the Karregutta forest, located on the border of Bijapur and Sukma districts in Chhattisgarh, security forces killed 31 notorious Naxalites. This historic operation, known as the 'Karregutta Encounter,' is being hailed as the biggest anti-Naxal success in the last two decades.
During the operation, security forces not only strategically surrounded the Naxalites but also live video footage of the encounter emerged, showcasing the bravery and efficiency of the security personnel to the entire nation. This operation has dealt a significant blow to the Naxalite network and is considered a crucial step towards restoring peace in the region.
Operation Karregutta: A Well-Planned Operation
The operation was jointly executed by the CRPF’s Cobra unit, DRG (District Reserve Guard), STF, and local police. Based on intelligence gathered, the operation commenced around 2 AM on May 13th. Security forces encircled the Naxalites’ hideout and launched an assault at 5 AM. Naxalites, hidden in the slopes and caves of the forest, retaliated, but were ultimately outmatched by the superior strategy and technology of the security forces.
Video footage recorded using drones and body cameras during the operation is now viral. It shows the security personnel scaling hills and taking positions amidst dense forests. The gunfire, explosions, and the Naxalites’ final attempts to escape were all captured on camera. The video also clearly shows the Naxalites’ possession of sophisticated weaponry and the substantial stockpiles they had accumulated.
Sophisticated Weapons and Large Quantities of Logistics Recovered
Security forces recovered a large quantity of weapons, explosives, and enough food supplies for two years from the encounter site. These included sophisticated sniper rifles, American-model rifles, IED-making materials, wireless sets, anti-drone nets, and a large sum of cash. This indicates the Naxalites were attempting to establish Karregutta as a permanent base.
Photographs from the operation depict how the security personnel overcame challenging terrains to encircle the Naxalites. One image shows an injured soldier being carried on a shoulder, while another shows security forces loading recovered weapons onto trucks. Some photographs also showcase the grandeur and protective features of the underground hideouts built by the Naxalites.
Top Naxal Leaders Among Those Killed
Several wanted Naxal commanders, with combined rewards of lakhs of rupees offered by the state and central governments, were killed in this encounter. These included a DVCM-level Naxal leader, a woman wing commander, and two IED experts. Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated that this operation is not just a military success but a sign that India is moving towards eradicating internal terrorism. He emphasized that the bravery, training of our soldiers, and the support of the public are our true strengths.
Following this operation, the fear that had gripped Karregutta and surrounding villages for decades appears to be diminishing. Lakshman Podiami, an elder from the village, stated, “We saw for the first time such a large-scale operation against the Naxalites, and they didn't escape, they were killed. Now we hope our lives will return to normal.”
