Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has warned that he will resign from his post if statehood is not restored soon. His statement is being seen as a move to increase political pressure on the Centre and demonstrate his commitment to the public.
Jammu-Kashmir: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, intensifying pressure on the central government, has stated that he will resign from his position if statehood is not restored within a defined timeframe. This statement comes at a time when the by-election process is underway in the region, and discontent over statehood is growing within his own party. Omar Abdullah's statement is considered a significant message in political circles, viewed as a clear warning to the central government.
Warning of Resignation if Statehood Not Restored
During an interaction with a media group in Srinagar on Sunday, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said that his continuation in the Chief Minister's office is directly linked to the restoration of statehood. He emphasized that this is not just about politics, but a matter of public trust and political integrity.
Omar stated that if Jammu and Kashmir does not regain statehood within the stipulated timeframe, he will voluntarily step down from his post. However, he did not declare a clear deadline, leading to speculation that he intends to put indirect pressure on the Centre.
A Strategy to Pressure the Centre?

Omar Abdullah's statement is being viewed as a political strategy. He remarked, “Without the dignity of statehood, my position holds no meaning.” His comments have garnered significant reaction on social media. Many interpret it as a tactic to pressure the Centre, while others see it as a sign of his commitment to the public.
Increased Pressure Within the Party
This pressure on Omar Abdullah is not only from the Centre or the opposition but also from within his own party. His colleague and NC MP Aga Ruhullah Mehdi publicly accused him of backing down from his promises.
Mehdi stated, “People elected us to government not to improve relations with Delhi, but to restore the pre-2019 status.” He clearly added that if the NC government fails to restore statehood, it would be a betrayal of the public.
Congress Also Enters the Fray
Omar Abdullah's ally, the Congress party, has also become active on this issue. The party is agitating for the restoration of statehood. Congress leaders argue that Jammu and Kashmir's identity remains incomplete until it regains full statehood.
Amit Shah's Statement – 'Statehood Will Be Restored at an Appropriate Time'
A few days ago, Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated in Parliament that Jammu and Kashmir's statehood would be restored at an appropriate time. However, he did not specify a definite date. The central government argues that statehood will only be returned after complete peace and stability are restored in Jammu and Kashmir.
