Meta Security Update: Social media giant Meta has added new AI tools to WhatsApp and Messenger to protect its users from online scams. The company will now identify suspicious activities during chats and video calls and warn users. As part of this initiative, Meta has caught over 8 million criminal scam networks and has also launched a campaign with local creators in India to increase fraud awareness.
Meta's Major Step to Combat Online Fraud
Meta has taken a significant step to protect its users from online deception and digital fraud. The company is now rolling out AI-based alerts and security features on WhatsApp and Messenger that will proactively warn users about potential scams. These features will identify suspicious activities during chats and calls and immediately alert users.
Screen Sharing Alert Coming to WhatsApp
Meta has added a new security alert system for WhatsApp video calls. If a user attempts to share their screen with an unknown person, the app will immediately display a warning: "Only share your screen with trusted individuals, as this could leak your bank details or private information."
The company states that this feature will help protect against scammers who pressure users into sharing their screens to steal sensitive information such as banking details or verification codes. This alert will further strengthen WhatsApp's security system.

AI Scam Detection System Coming to Messenger
Meta has also developed a new AI-based scam detection system for Messenger. This system will scan users' chats in real-time and provide warnings upon detecting any suspicious messages or links.
Users will also have the option to submit their recent chats for AI scam review. According to Meta, this system will not only identify potential scams but also advise users on taking security measures such as blocking and reporting. The company is currently running it in a testing phase, and it will be rolled out globally soon.
Meta Dismantles Over 8 Million Scam Networks
According to Meta, it recently dismantled over 8 million criminal scam networks on Facebook and Instagram. These networks were active in countries like Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, and the UAE, defrauding people through messaging apps, social media, and crypto platforms.
The company also took action against more than 21,000 fake pages and accounts that were attempting to obtain users' private information by impersonating customer support.
Scam Awareness Campaign to be Launched in India
In India, Meta has partnered with comedy content creators to raise awareness about preventing online fraud. These campaigns will use engaging content to educate people on how to strengthen their digital security with features like two-factor authentication, block, and report tools.
Meta appears to be more serious about its users' security than ever before. These new scam alerts and AI features coming to WhatsApp and Messenger can significantly reduce instances of online deception. In the coming months, when these tools are released to all users, online messaging will become even more secure.
