Chief Justice of India (CJI) B.R. Gavai openly discussed the serious challenges facing India's judicial system on Saturday. He stated that the country's legal system faces numerous issues that now urgently need to be addressed.

Hyderabad: Chief Justice of India (CJI) B.R. Gavai, while raising serious concerns about the country's judicial system, emphasized the need for its systematic reform. Speaking at an event at the NALSAR University of Law in Hyderabad, he said that the Indian legal system has several shortcomings that lead to innocent people spending decades in jail and undue delays in receiving justice.

'Need to reform the country's judicial system' - CJI Gavai

Addressing the gathering, CJI Gavai said that our country and judicial system are undergoing serious challenges. Often, trials drag on for decades, and cases arise where individuals are found innocent but have already spent many valuable years of their lives in jail. This is not just a legal problem but also a human tragedy.

CJI Gavai, addressing the students of NALSAR University, said that India needs young talent for judicial reforms. He urged future lawyers and law students to contribute to improving this system. The country's best and most talented youth should participate in tackling this challenge. "All of you can play a crucial role in making the country's justice system more effective, just, and timely," he said.

Special message for students going abroad

CJI Gavai, while speaking on another important issue, said that students should not burden their parents financially to study abroad, but instead, should take advantage of educational opportunities through scholarships. He said that the country needs young people who are self-reliant and responsible towards society.

On this special occasion, Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, Supreme Court Justice P.S. Narasimha, Acting Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court Sujoy Paul, and other senior officials were also present. This event, held at NALSAR University, is considered very important regarding legal education and the agenda for reforms in the judicial sector.

Delay in the judicial system remains a major challenge

Millions of cases are pending for years in Indian courts. Delays in trials, slow pace of hearings, and the time taken to receive justice have been a persistent problem in the Indian justice system. CJI Gavai's remarks reiterate that until this system is strengthened at the technical, administrative, and human resource levels, sayings like "justice delayed is justice denied" will remain meaningful.

CJI Gavai's remarks come at a time when a nationwide debate is underway regarding judicial reforms. Recently, the Supreme Court also expressed concern over delays in several cases and advised the government to expedite appointments to judicial posts. In such a situation, CJI's remarks reflect a b reformist perspective, in which he is appealing to the youth of the country to participate in improving this system from within.
