Inquiries by the ATS into Jamalluddin, alias Changur Baba, the mastermind behind the conversion racket, have revealed several shocking details. It emerged during the interrogation that Changur Baba employed an organized code word system to keep the activities of his network secret and unintelligible to outsiders.
Lucknow: A joint investigation by the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has exposed an illegal conversion network, with Jamalluddin, alias Changur Baba, identified as the mastermind. This network used a coded language to entrap young women and socially vulnerable groups for conversion.
Changur Baba used terms like 'Mitti Palatna' (Turn the Soil), 'Kajal Karna' (Apply Kohl), and 'Darshan' (Meeting) within his network to carry out his schemes, ensuring that outsiders couldn't understand their conversations. However, the ATS investigation has now unraveled these code words, exposing the entire web.
Conversion Business Conducted in Code Words
According to information received by the ATS, Changur Baba used specific code words for conversions:
- ‘Mitti Palatna’ – To convert someone
- ‘Kajal Karna’ – To influence someone mentally
- ‘Darshan’ – To make someone meet the Baba (part of brainwashing)
- ‘Project’ – To target a girl
Through these words, he gave instructions to his associates. Young women were mentally weakened by promises of marriage, jobs, scholarships, and opportunities to go abroad.
Contact with Christian Missionaries
The ATS interrogation also revealed that Changur Baba was in contact with some Christian missionaries, especially in seven sensitive districts bordering Nepal. He paid the missionaries' volunteers to gather information on vulnerable, Dalit, and economically backward families. Following this, he would offer financial assistance, or lure them with promises of education and healthcare to convert them. The entire network operated on a chain system involving evangelists, priests, and field workers.
Changur Baba often cited a so-called 'success story'. He would say, "Neetu, alias Nasreen, and Naveen, alias Jamalluddin, were originally Sindhis, but their lives changed after embracing Islam. Now they have luxurious homes, expensive cars, and plenty of money. You too embrace Islam, your fate will also change."
This formula worked psychologically, particularly on poor and marginalized families. They were promised a new identity, a new name, and a new life after conversion.
ED Initiates Financial Investigation
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has also become active in this case, focusing on illegal funding and property details. According to sources, information on seven bank accounts of Naveen Rohra, a close associate of Changur Baba, has come to light, while investigations into 18 other accounts are ongoing. The ED has requested details of properties registered in the names of the Baba and his associates from the relevant sub-registrar offices in Balrampur, Bahraich, Shravasti, and Gonda districts. Action may be taken on these properties after the reports are received.
