Parking disputes are rapidly turning violent in Delhi. 7,328 such cases were registered in 2023. The recent murder of Huma Qureshi's brother has highlighted this serious issue.
Delhi Parking Dispute: The tension over parking on Delhi's roads is now turning into violent incidents. The recent murder of actress Huma Qureshi's brother, Asif Qureshi, in a parking dispute has drawn the nation's attention to this serious problem.
Asif Qureshi's Murder: A Warning
On the night of August 7, Asif Qureshi was murdered in Delhi's Nizamuddin area over a dispute about scooter parking. Two people stabbed him in the incident. The police have arrested the accused and also seized the weapon. This incident not only raises questions about law and order but also shows how a minor parking argument can take a fatal turn.
Increasing Violence in Parking Disputes
Parking disputes are not new in Delhi, but now these quarrels are escalating to violence and even murder. According to Delhi Police data, 2,413 complaints related to parking disputes were registered in 2021. This number increased to 3,367 in 2022. In 2023, this number reached 7,328. This means that these cases have almost tripled in two years.
Illegal Parking Becomes a Major Problem
Illegal parking has become common on the roads of Delhi. So far in 2024, 4.79 lakh challans have been issued for illegal parking alone. People park vehicles haphazardly on roads, footpaths, streets, and even in front of housing societies. This not only obstructs traffic but also causes great difficulties for pedestrians.
Unrestrained Increase in Vehicles
According to the Delhi Economic Survey, a total of 79.46 lakh vehicles are registered in Delhi. These include 20.71 lakh cars and jeeps, and about 53 lakh motorcycles and scooters. In addition, there are lakhs of commercial vehicles including autos, taxis, buses, trucks, and tractors. Approximately 1,500 new vehicles are being registered every day. But parking space is very limited in the city.
Conflicts Arising from Vehicles Parked in Streets
In many areas of Delhi, roads are completely blocked due to vehicles parked in the streets. Small colony disputes are escalating from verbal abuse to assault and now to murder. Lack of tolerance in society and lack of fear of the law also promote these incidents.
Administrative Negligence and Disorder
A major reason for the parking problem in Delhi is also the weakness of the administration's preparation and policy. The lack of strict rules to prevent illegal parking and their proper enforcement further deepens this crisis. Zonal parking plans or multi-level parking projects remain only on paper.
