Delhi Police Arrests Serial Scooty-Borne Harasser After Extensive CCTV and Vehicle Data Review

A scooty-borne assailant sexually harassed a girl twice in Delhi's Model Town; police apprehended the accused, Kangkan Nath, by examining over 500 CCTV footages and data from 1.5 lakh scooters.

New Delhi: A young woman in Delhi's Model Town area was subjected to sexual harassment twice by a person riding a scooty. Initially, she remained silent out of fear, but when the incident occurred again, she gathered courage and filed a complaint with the police. Acting swiftly, the police identified the suspect vehicle from data of 1.5 lakh scooters and apprehended the accused after scrutinizing over 500 CCTV footages.

The First Incident Instilled Fear in the Young Woman

The young woman recounted that she was completely stunned when the accused first misbehaved with her. After the incident, she felt afraid to leave her house. She repeatedly worried about the same incident happening again. The initial assault instilled a sense of insecurity and fear in her mind. She hesitated to disclose the incident to her family and friends.

When the accused attacked for the second time within two days, the young woman decided she would no longer remain silent. This time, the incident was even more terrifying. The accused not only molested her but also attempted to grab her private parts. This incident shook the young woman's morale, and she directly approached the police.

Police Registered a Case and Initiated Investigation

The Model Town police station immediately registered a case and commenced an investigation. A list of 1.5 lakh scooters was obtained from the Transport Department to identify the suspect vehicle. Subsequently, over 500 CCTV footages were thoroughly examined, and information was gathered from local residents. The police team worked day and night to track down the accused.

Under the guidance of ACP Suresh Khunga, SHO Ashok Giri, SI Divya, and other team members collaboratively traced the accused's location. Through a combination of technical and local investigation, the team succeeded in apprehending the accused. According to police sources, the case was initially a blind one, and tracing the accused was challenging.

Identification and Mindset of the Accused, Kangkan Nath

The police identified the accused as Kangkan Nath. He is 31 years old, a resident of Nalbari (Assam), and works as a security guard. During interrogation, he confessed that he derived pleasure from harassing girls on the move and touching their body parts. The accused is married and has a five-year-old daughter.

The investigation also revealed that the accused had committed sexual harassment against women in several areas of Delhi, including Bharat Nagar, Adarsh Nagar, Mukherjee Nagar, Civil Lines, and Model Town. The young women cited fear of defamation and legal complications as reasons for not reporting the incidents, which emboldened the accused.

Arrest of the Accused

Model Town police registered a case against the accused under relevant sections and arrested him. DCP Bhisham Singh stated that the victim's courage and the police's prompt action led to the successful resolution of this case. This incident also highlights the importance of awareness and safety among women.

The police are now taking additional steps to identify other potential victims of the accused and ensure their safety. The victim's bravery and the police's swift action clearly demonstrate that transforming fear into courage and confronting criminals is the first step towards safety.
