Devotees gathered in large numbers at Kanpur's prominent Shiva temples on the first day of the holy month of Sawan, with long queues forming outside temple premises from early morning. Carrying Gangajal, bel leaves, flowers and materials, devotees arrived throughout the day to offer prayers and perform Jalabhishek to Lord Shiva.
Special prayers and rituals were conducted at Anandeshwar Temple and other major Shiva temples across the city. Devotees performed abhishek with water and milk, and offered bel leaves, dhatura, flowers and fruits while praying for the well-being and prosperity of their families. Many devotees also took a pledge to observe fasts and perform regular worship of Lord Shiva throughout the month of Sawan.
Temple gates opened at daybreak, after which devotees began arriving in large numbers. Women, children, elderly people and youth participated in the worship, with many devotees walking from distant areas to reach the temples. Shops selling worship materials around the temples remained open, with bel leaves, flowers, garlands, prasad and other ritual items available for devotees.
The first Monday of Sawan and the initial days of the holy month are considered to hold special importance for the worship of Lord Shiva. Devotees visited temples after taking a morning bath and performed rituals according to traditional practices. Some devotees chanted Shiva mantras within temple premises, while bhajan and kirtan programmes were also held at several locations.
Special security arrangements were made in and around the temples in view of the large gathering of devotees. Police personnel and volunteers managed queues, facilitated orderly entry into the temples and assisted devotees after darshan. Barricades were installed at several locations to regulate queues and minimise inconvenience.
Drinking water and other essential facilities were arranged for devotees within temple premises. Volunteers assisted elderly people and women in the queues, while police maintained continuous surveillance at crowded locations.
With the beginning of Sawan, markets across Kanpur also reflected the religious observance. Saffron clothing for Shiva devotees, rudraksha beads, replicas of Shivlings and worship materials were available for sale. Devotional songs and hymns dedicated to Lord Shiva were played at various locations.
Devotees said that offering prayers and performing Jalabhishek during Sawan brings peace of mind. Many stated that they visit Shiva temples every year during Sawan and had again come with their families this year to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva.
Religious observances continued across the city throughout the first day of Sawan, with worship and darshan continuing until late in the day at temples.
