Devuthani Ekadashi 2025: 5 Crucial Actions to Avoid on This Sacred Day

Devuthani Ekadashi 2025 falls on November 1, marking Lord Vishnu's awakening. Learn its profound significance, the Tulsi Vivah, and 5 strict prohibitions to ensure blessings and prosperity on this auspicious day.

According to the Hindu calendar, Devuthani Ekadashi or Devotthan Ekadashi Vrat in the year 2025 will be observed on Saturday, November 1, 2025. This date is considered extremely sacred from a religious perspective because on this day, Lord Vishnu awakens from His four-month yoganidra (cosmic sleep) and once again takes charge of the creation's operations. This marks the end of Chaturmas, and all auspicious activities like weddings, housewarmings, and tonsure ceremonies begin.

Devuthani Ekadashi: On this day, Lord Vishnu and Mata Tulsi are especially worshipped. It is believed that individuals who observe this fast with proper rules and devotion find negativity removed from their lives, and happiness and prosperity prevail. However, scriptures also state that certain actions should be strictly avoided on this day, as failing to do so can have negative impacts on one's life. Let's learn about those actions that are considered prohibited on this auspicious day.

Significance of Devuthani Ekadashi

Devuthani Ekadashi, also known as Prabodhini Ekadashi or Tulsi Ekadashi, is celebrated on the Ekadashi (eleventh day) of the Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight) of the Kartik month. Religious belief holds that when Lord Vishnu awakens after being in yoganidra for four months, auspicious activities resume on Earth. These four months are called Chaturmas, during which no auspicious ceremonies are performed.

On this day, the marriage of Lord Vishnu and Mata Tulsi is also solemnized. This marriage symbolically represents the victory of the gods over demons and the re-establishment of Dharma (righteousness). This is why this day is celebrated with great joy and enthusiasm in many families.

Devuthani Ekadashi 2025: 5 Crucial Actions to Avoid on This Sacred Day

Actions to Avoid

1. Do not eat rice on Ekadashi

Consuming rice on Devuthani Ekadashi is considered completely prohibited. Religious belief states that eating rice on this day leads to being born as an insect in the next life. Scriptures mention that rice contains a high 'water element' and increases lethargy. Therefore, not only those observing the fast but also other family members should avoid eating rice on this day.
If you are fasting, you can eat fruits, sago (sabudana), peanuts, or dishes made from water chestnut flour (singhara atta). This helps maintain energy and ensures the fast is successful.

2. Plucking Tulsi leaves is considered inauspicious

On Devuthani Ekadashi, the marriage of Lord Vishnu and Mata Tulsi takes place. On this day, Mata Tulsi herself observes a fast, so Tulsi leaves should not be plucked.
If you wish to offer Tulsi leaves to Lord Vishnu, pluck them a day in advance. Worshipping Tulsi and participating in Tulsi Vivah on this day is considered highly auspicious. Offering a lamp to Mata Tulsi is believed to infuse positive energy into the home.

3. Avoid meat, alcohol, and Tamasic food

The day of Ekadashi is considered a symbol of purity (sattvic nature). Scriptures clearly state that consumption of meat, alcohol, onion, garlic, and Tamasic food is prohibited on this day. Doing so nullifies the benefits of the fast and can lead to negative effects in life.
On this day, one should remain pure in thought, word, and deed. Engaging in devotional singing (bhajan-kirtan), scripture recitation (katha-path), and meditation, absorbed in devotion to Lord Vishnu, leads to the accumulation of merit (punya).

4. One should not sleep during the day

Sleeping during the day on Devuthani Ekadashi is considered prohibited. It is said that individuals who sleep during the day on this occasion have their fast remain incomplete. Religious belief holds that staying awake (jagran) on Ekadashi is auspicious, as it leads to attaining Vishnu Loka (the abode of Lord Vishnu).
On this day, one should light a lamp in front of an idol or picture of Lord Vishnu, listen to stories (katha), and perform devotional singing (bhajan-kirtan). Remembering the name of the Lord throughout the night is considered especially fruitful on this day.

5. Avoid arguments and harsh words

On Devuthani Ekadashi, it is very important to keep the mind calm and restrained. One should avoid quarrels or arguments with anyone. Additionally, one should not utter abusive or harsh words towards anyone. Religious belief states that negative thoughts and behavior destroy the benefits of the fast on this day.
Therefore, try to maintain a positive mindset throughout the day and adopt feelings of love, compassion, and tolerance.

Devuthani Ekadashi Puja Rituals

On Devuthani Ekadashi, after taking a bath in the morning, a vow for the fast is taken. Install an idol of Lord Vishnu adorned in yellow garments (pitambar vastra) and worship Him along with Tulsi. Perform abhishek (ritual bathing) of the Lord with Tulsi leaves, Panchamrit (a mixture of milk, curd, ghee, honey, and sugar/gangajal), milk, curd, ghee, honey, and Gangajal.
Observe a vigil (jagran) at night and break the fast on the Dwadashi (twelfth day) tithi the following day. It is believed that observing a fast and performing charity on this day leads to immense and imperishable merit (akshay punya).

Religious Significance and Scientific Perspective

Devuthani Ekadashi is significant not only from a religious perspective but also scientifically. This period of the year coincides with seasonal changes. Fasting and consuming sattvic (pure) food work to detoxify the body. Tulsi worship and vigil (jagran) enhance mental peace and positivity.
Scriptures state that even a small auspicious act performed on this day yields many times more benefits compared to ordinary days.
