The Election Commission of India is seeking legal advice on a complaint submitted by a Congress delegation regarding the rejection of Rajya Sabha candidate Meenakshi Natarajan’s nomination from Madhya Pradesh.
The controversy over the rejection of Natarajan’s nomination has intensified, with the Congress indicating that it may approach the Supreme Court over the matter. According to sources, a Congress delegation met Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and other Election Commissioners and submitted a written complaint.
The Congress has alleged that the rejection of Meenakshi Natarajan’s nomination was not in accordance with the prescribed procedures and rules. The party described the decision as arbitrary and demanded an immediate review.
Sources associated with the Election Commission said all aspects related to the rejection of the nomination are undergoing legal scrutiny. The Commission is examining whether the decision was fully consistent with electoral rules and legal provisions. While the Commission has declined to comment publicly on the matter, a formal response is expected in due course.
In protest against the rejection of the nomination, the Madhya Pradesh Congress organized demonstrations across the state. Congress leaders and legislators observed a hunger strike on Wednesday in Bhopal and several other districts. Protesters said the decision was contrary to the democratic process and raised questions about electoral fairness.
Congress leaders alleged that the decision to reject the nomination may have been influenced politically. The party has demanded a transparent inquiry into the matter and a review of the decision by the Election Commission.
According to sources, the Congress is preparing to pursue the issue through legal channels. Senior party leaders have indicated that if a satisfactory response is not received from the Election Commission, the matter will be challenged in the Supreme Court. The party said it would take all available legal steps to safeguard democratic rights.
The controversy has also drawn reactions from Congress leaders in other states, including Telangana. A complaint has also been filed against what has been described as misleading propaganda allegedly being circulated on social media regarding the Rajya Sabha nomination dispute.
Congress MP Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy submitted a formal complaint at the Central Crime Station in Hyderabad against certain social media accounts. He alleged that those accounts were spreading false and misleading information against Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and attempting to politically influence the broader controversy.
