Pakistan-administered Kashmir witnessed a major military aviation incident on Wednesday when a Pakistani Army Mi-17 helicopter crashed near Muzaffarabad shortly after takeoff. Initial reports claimed that all 21 security personnel on board were killed, although the military has not officially confirmed the casualty figure.
The helicopter was reportedly en route to the Neelum Valley sector at the time of the accident. The area has recently remained sensitive due to security and political tensions.
According to preliminary information, the helicopter developed a technical fault shortly after takeoff. The pilot reportedly attempted an emergency landing, but the aircraft could not be brought down safely and crashed.
The Pakistani military confirmed the incident and said an investigation had been ordered to determine the exact cause of the crash. It remains unclear whether the accident resulted from a technical malfunction or another factor.
Reports said the security personnel on board were travelling for deployment in the Neelum Valley region of Pakistan-administered Kashmir. Authorities have reportedly been strengthening security arrangements in the area amid recent political tensions and protests.
Local authorities had deployed additional forces as disputes and demonstrations continued over reserved seats in the legislative assembly.

Following the crash, Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir and other senior military officials expressed condolences. The military described the incident as a serious accident and said a detailed investigation would be conducted.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also expressed grief over the incident. Both leaders conveyed condolences to the families of those killed and said the country would remember the sacrifice of the security personnel.
The prime minister stated that the nation would not forget the service and sacrifice of its soldiers and that all possible assistance would be provided to the affected families.
The crashed aircraft was a Mi-17, a Russian-origin military transport helicopter used by armed forces in several countries. Pakistan acquired the platform from Russia after the dissolution of the Soviet Union and later inducted upgraded variants.
The helicopter is primarily used for troop deployment, logistics supply, relief and rescue operations, and casualty evacuation missions. Its operational capability in mountainous terrain has made it a key transport platform.
The Mi-17 can reportedly carry approximately 24 to 36 soldiers and operate in adverse weather conditions and high-altitude regions. It has a maximum speed of about 250 kilometres per hour and an operational ceiling of around 6,000 metres.
